Overview
Summary
The family lingers over a take-out dinner of clam chowder, sourdough, and Caesar salad on the deck as the sun sets. Rocky observes that her mother Alice, though groggy and barely eating, doesn't seem in imminent danger, and blurts this out tipsily. Alice laughs and reassures everyone she feels fine, while Mort acknowledges Alice's resilience and Maya gently extends the same to him.
Rocky reflects on how much more she wants to ask her father about his Jewish identity and childhood grief, hoping there will be time. She dreads the end of the vacation, picturing dropping the kids at the Providence train and returning to an empty house with Nick, where she'll cry in his arms missing them. She suspects her own parents feel the same way about her.
Willa proposes a night swim in the pond. Rocky joins her while the others stay back to watch the Mets game or rest. The two undress at the bench and slip into the dark water under a rising moon, surrounded by crickets and frogs. Willa checks in about Grandma and Maya, doing a health-and-safety audit alongside her mother, which makes Rocky feel less alone.
Willa then asks what Nick had to say about Maya's pregnancy, and Rocky realizes with embarrassment that she hasn't had a chance to tell him and doesn't even know if he knows. Willa scolds her and insists Jamie should tell him. Floating together under the emerging stars, Willa invites Rocky to continue their earlier conversation about her pregnancies, assuring her she's genuinely curious. Rocky agrees to share.
