At the hospital, Alice is diagnosed with dehydration, mild heat exhaustion, and a possible insect sting on her ankle. Rocky recounts riding in the ambulance with her disoriented mother, who vomited and didn't recognize her. The EMT was reassuring, citing good vitals. Now in a curtained ER room, Alice sleeps on a gurney connected to an IV and antinausea medication while Rocky sits beside her, the adrenaline wearing off.

Rocky is overwhelmed by the realization that her mother will eventually die, reflecting on her childhood adoration of her glamorous, perfumed mother and contrasting her parents' clearly defined traditional roles with her own messy, exhausting partnership with Nick.
