Chapter 31
Overview
Koen's pack raids the cult cabin, rescues Serena, and scatters Irene's operation, but Irene herself escapes and the larger cult remains active. In the aftermath, Serena's worsening condition reveals that her Were Heat has advanced too far for medical suppression. Layla makes clear that this creates a major turning point: helping Serena through the Heat may force Koen to choose between his obligations to the pack and his bond with his mate.
Summary
A brief memory underscores Koen's old guilt: after finding a drugged, undersized child Serena, he handed her over to Human social services, still unsure whether he was doing the right thing. In the present, that history gives new meaning to Serena's realization that Koen has long tried not to repeat the failures of his parents.
Moments later, several wolves crash through the cabin windows and the Northwest pack storms the cult hideout. Koen frees Serena in the chaos, orders Saul to guard her, and shifts to pursue Irene after giving Serena her pink knife. While the fighting continues, Serena finds Nele, Nele's family, and two Human boys hiding in terror; Serena reassures them that the pack came only for her, insists they will not be harmed, and admits that Koen feels more like family than Irene does.
After the fight ends, Amanda checks Serena and immediately notices that Serena is feverish and dangerously overheated. Serena loses consciousness and later wakes in Koen's room, where his scent eases her nausea and agitation. When Serena enters the living room, the presence of Koen's people triggers intense possessiveness and hostility, making it clear that her Were Heat is already affecting her instincts.
Koen and the others explain what happened after the rescue: Irene escaped when rain destroyed her scent trail, four cult Weres were killed, Jess was badly injured and remains unconscious, one more Were escaped, and the surviving cultists were captured and questioned. The six Humans from the cabin have been moved into Northwest territory as protected guests under surveillance, since Irene might either reclaim them or silence them. Serena also learns that the cult is much larger than the cabin group, with more than fifty members still at large, and she asks Amanda to give Nele a way to contact her.
In private, Layla examines Serena and delivers the real crisis: Serena is too far into Heat for the suppressant injection, and giving it now could prolong the Heat, worsen it, or damage Serena permanently. Layla explains that Serena's scent and physical symptoms make her condition obvious to any adult Were, and instead offers contraceptive pills to be taken after the Heat. Serena is humiliated to realize that others know, but Layla stresses that the deeper problem is Koen's position.
Layla tells Serena that the coming Heat forces Koen into a painful choice between the covenant that binds the Alpha to the pack and the duty to care for his mate if Serena needs him. Because Koen would never refuse Serena, Layla decides to conceal what happens next from the rest of the pack, framing the coming days as a temporary loan: Serena can have Koen now, but must give him back afterward. When everyone else leaves the cabin and only Koen remains, the chapter ends with that private, dangerous choice hanging over them.
