Chapter 25
Overview
Serena asks Layla to try stopping her Heat instead of finding her a partner, because Serena suspects she wants only Koen and refuses to risk the political fallout that would follow if the Alpha helped her through Estrus. At the same time, Koen is pulled away to handle a failed Vampyre abduction attempt that may be tied to a council plot against Serena, underscoring how dangerous her existence has become.
Once Serena realizes she is not actually dying of CSD, she begins imagining a future again, which makes her growing bond with Koen even more painful. Their tender, carefully restrained evening together deepens that bond just as another fever surge starts, proving that time and self-control are running out.
Summary
After learning that her fevers are the onset of Estrus rather than CSD, Serena asks Layla whether a high dose of progesterone could prevent Heat. Layla explains that Serena’s hybrid biology is unpredictable: Serena’s symptoms appeared unusually early, her hormones are abnormal, and past drugs have failed or reacted oddly. When Layla suggests finding Serena a suitable partner instead, Serena admits that she may be fixed on Koen and would not want anyone else. Even so, Serena insists on suppression because if Koen helped her through Heat, he would have to step down as Alpha, which could trigger a succession fight and political rupture in the Northwest.
Outside, Brenna tells Serena that Koen left to deal with a border incident. On the drive home, Brenna reveals that two groups of Vampyres tried to abduct Serena; one group appears designed as a false flag, while Owen believes another points to Councilwoman Selamio, who wants Serena captured for invasive study. Brenna’s blunt question about whether Serena is dying makes Serena fully absorb the new diagnosis: she is not dying of CSD after all, which means she may have years ahead of her. Overwhelmed by the possibility of a future, Serena asks to stop at a store because she will need sunscreen.
Serena spends the day alone in Koen’s cabin under heavy Were guard, speaking by phone with Ana and Misery but not yet sharing the medical news. She tries to settle herself by cleaning, playing piano, and napping, while remembering Layla’s warning that pre-Heat surges can cause intense fevers. When Koen returns near sunset, Serena sees that he has been wounded during the interrogation of a captured Vampyre whose restraints failed. Serena fusses over the injury and makes him let her inspect it, then redirects the evening into ordinary care by serving him dinner.
The rest of the night becomes an intentionally limited version of domestic intimacy. Serena and Koen eat together, joke, wash dishes, drink tea on the porch, talk about his duties as Alpha, share cookies, and work on a crossword while leaning against each other. Both of them feel how strong their attachment has become, but they keep obeying the rule that this can only be a moment set apart from the future consequences. The chapter ends just as Serena grows sleepy in Koen’s arms and another fever begins, showing that the coming Heat is still advancing despite her plan.
