Chapter 11
Overview
Koen brings Serena into the Northwest Den and insists she stay in his cabin rather than alone, forcing a confrontation over her need for privacy and control. To prove she can live independently, Serena must spar with Koen's second Brenna, whose hostility reveals both the pack's doubts about Serena and Koen's complicated past.
During the fight, Serena learns key history about the Northwest's old division and Koen's role in reunifying it, but she ultimately loses the test. Koen's final decision keeps Serena under his roof, while Brenna's warning underscores how unwelcome and precarious Serena's place in the pack remains.
Summary
After a jokingly threatening text exchange from an unknown number that turns out to involve Ana, Serena wakes from a long nap as Koen drives her into the Northwest Den near an estuary. Koen shows her the Were settlement, and Serena is struck by how different it looks from Human cities and by how many pack members are in wolf form because the moon still pulls strongly on them. Koen brings her to his own cabin at the edge of the woods, where Serena realizes he intends to keep her there under his protection.
Inside the sparse, handcrafted house, Serena tries repeatedly to convince Koen to let her stay somewhere isolated and alone. Koen refuses, making clear that since Serena asked him to take her in and use her as bait to draw danger away from Ana, he will decide where she stays. He also reveals that he will not sleep inside with her but outside in wolf form, yet Serena still resists because she wants privacy for both her instability and the secret she nearly tells him about her worsening condition.
When Serena directly asks what it would take to live on her own, Koen offers a test: if she can prove she can handle herself, he will allow it. Instead of taking her to a remote house, he brings her to a gym and introduces her to Brenna, one of his seconds, who trains younger pack members in combat. Serena realizes Brenna and Koen have a past relationship, and the knowledge unsettles her even before Koen pointedly refuses to spar with Serena himself and leaves Brenna to prove whether Serena can survive an attack.
During the sparring match, Serena holds her own better than Brenna expects, and while they fight, Serena questions Brenna about the Northwest. Brenna explains that the pack split about forty years earlier because of a conflict between the former Alpha and the Assembly, creating separate huddles and a core, but they later reunited when outside forces tried to destroy them. Brenna says Koen restored unity by making promises and winning repeated challenges, and she reveals that the crisis cost her parents and infant sister.
The conversation turns personal when Brenna bluntly tells Serena that Koen does not need an inexperienced mate slowing him down and hopes Serena will leave once the immediate danger passes. Serena insists she has no intention of staying, that the mate bond does not mean she and Koen are romantically involved, and that they are not sleeping together. Serena momentarily gains the upper hand in the fight and looks to Koen as if she has won her freedom, but Brenna reverses the hold, chokes Serena from behind, and coldly tells her Koen will never touch her.
When the match ends, Serena is left on the mat, shaken and breathing hard. Koen looks down at her with amused certainty and tells her not to leave dirty dishes in the sink, making it clear that her loss means she will still be staying at his cabin rather than living on her own. The chapter deepens Serena's conflicted attraction to Koen, shows her outsider status within the Northwest, and gives her first real glimpse into the history and wounds of Koen's pack.
