Chapter 12
Overview
Serena and Koen discover a suspicious package containing a necklace and a note claiming to be from Serena’s mother, introducing a troubling new mystery about Serena’s past and who can reach her inside Northwest territory. Koen then tests whether Serena’s shifting problem can be broken through Alpha command, but the attempt fails, confirming that her condition is more serious than a simple mental block.
Koen responds by shifting from diagnosis to strategy: he will publicly keep Serena at his side to bait the forces hunting hybrids and let outside spies confirm where she is. The chapter also deepens their intimacy through domestic, teasing moments that contrast with the danger around them, ending with Serena’s realization that she is unprepared for the role Koen is about to make her play.
Summary
After losing the sparring match, Serena follows Koen outside and finds a wrapped parcel on his car labeled for the "former Human." When Serena tries to grab it, Koen physically stops her and insists on treating it as a possible threat, explaining that someone who knows the pack’s camera blind spots delivered it. Inside, they find an unsigned note reading "From your mother" and a silver necklace marked with a clawed moon, which unsettles both Serena and Koen.
Back at Koen’s house, Serena notices more of his private life, including an old family-heirloom piano and a nearly empty, unplugged refrigerator. Their banter turns physical and tense when Koen orders Serena to close her eyes and uses his Alpha voice to guide her through memories of shifting, hoping to determine whether her inability to change forms is mental. Serena’s body strains toward a shift and she ends up drenched in sweat, but she still cannot transform, confirming to Koen that something more complicated is blocking her.
When Serena worries that she may never shift again, Koen treats it as a tactical fact rather than a personal tragedy, saying he only needs to know her limits to keep her alive. He then explains his next plan: because Serena wants to draw out the Vampyres targeting hybrids, he will publicly keep her close so outside observers can confirm she is under his protection. Koen reveals that Vampyres and Humans regularly spy on Northwest territory with drones, and he implies that enemies would logically expect his mate to be kept with him.
Serena asks again about the necklace and whether her mother might truly have sent it, but Koen shuts the idea down and says he will investigate. Their conversation is interrupted by Jorma, who needs Koen’s attention for paperwork related to the dead Vampyre. Serena spends a rare, peaceful night at the cabin while Koen guards outside in wolf form, and she quietly steals extra bedding from his room for comfort.
In the morning, Serena finds Koen on the porch with a friendly wolf-dog that sometimes roams near the property. The calm scene and their joking conversation show Serena feeling safer and more at home with Koen. She gives him coffee through a game she once played with Misery, and their flirtatious argument continues until Serena returns to her room and realizes a practical new problem: she has no clothes of her own for the public appearance Koen is planning.
