Serena, a half-Human, half-Were hybrid, flees barefoot through the cold forest after waking to an intruder at her cabin. She desperately tries to shift into a wolf, but her body refuses. A pursuing Vampyre catches her, pins her to a tree, and threatens her with a knife. Serena stalls by pretending helplessness, then uses the opening to fight back with strikes and a rock, but the Vampyre overpowers her again.

When the Vampyre is about to hurt Serena further, Koen Alexander arrives. Koen, the Alpha of the Northwest, immediately frightens the attacker, who realizes whose territory he has entered. The Vampyre tries to bargain, revealing that Serena has become a target after an interview and that Vampyres across the continent are hunting her for a bounty. He also mentions rumors that Serena is Koen's mate and that Serena rejected him, hoping Koen will let him take her away.

The confrontation sharpens when the Vampyre suggests sexual violence against Serena and offers to hand her to Koen first. Koen appears to go along with the idea, and Serena is briefly devastated, believing Koen has truly betrayed her. Koen steps close, touches Serena's face, and asks whether she would enjoy it. When Serena silently refuses, Koen's expression softens and he quietly tells Serena to use the rock still hidden in her hand.

As soon as the Vampyre's grip loosens, Serena drives the rock into his stomach. The attacker recovers fast enough to throw Serena down and raise his knife for a killing blow, but Koen kills him from behind with a savage claw strike across the back. After the danger passes, Koen speaks with his usual dry detachment, and Serena needles him about calling her his mate. Koen replies that naming her his mate does not mean he loves her, then decides Serena can no longer remain hidden at the cabin and carries her to the Den.
