Chapter 38
Overview
Serena wakes in the Den after four days unconscious and learns that she survived the battle, Irene is dead, the cult has been contained, and the Northwest pack escaped without fatalities. The chapter shifts from physical danger to emotional reckoning when Misery confronts Serena for repeatedly hiding major crises from her, forcing both women to admit how frightened, isolated, and dependent on each other they still are. By the end, Serena acknowledges that she loves Koen and may choose to remain in the Northwest even without him, marking a major step in defining where home and her future might be.
Summary
Serena wakes in a hospital bed in the Den after being unconscious for four days. Misery has been watching over her, and Serena learns that Koen spent those days sleeping beside her bed until pack business finally pulled him away. As Serena regains her bearings, Misery confirms that Irene shot Serena while Serena was in wolf form, but Serena’s worst injury came from hitting her head when she slammed into Irene.
Misery then fills Serena in on the battle’s outcome. Koen killed Irene, the redheaded girl used to hide Serena’s tracker recovered, the fire was extinguished, and no one in the Northwest pack died, though some people were injured. The cult has been broken up, with surviving members in custody, and Lowe had flown in with Misery before leaving again once Serena was out of danger.
The mood briefly lightens when Ana rushes in to see Serena. Ana chatters about matching narwhal tattoos with Misery, Koen buying her unicorn waffles, Misha’s upcoming birthday, and her growing friendship with Nele. The scene shows that Serena’s human ties and Koen’s pack have begun to overlap into something that already resembles family.
After Ana leaves, Misery reveals that her real anger is not about Serena’s dangerous bait plan, but about Serena once again hiding major parts of her life from her, including the Heat. Misery says secrecy leaves her feeling shut out and forced to learn about Serena’s suffering from other people. Serena finally admits that she has been withholding things because Misery now has Lowe, Ana, and a fuller life, and Serena does not want to drag Misery back into fear and chaos.
Misery pushes back by confessing that she is not secure or settled at all: she still feels lonely, worries that Lowe would be better off with a Were mate, and fears she is failing Ana, especially because Ana is being mocked at school for not shifting. That honesty helps both women reconnect around the fact that no one else understands them in quite the same way. In the aftermath, Serena admits that she loves Koen and that she wants to stay in the Northwest because it feels like home, even if she cannot be with him. Misery supports Serena’s choice as long as Serena stops hiding her life from her, and the chapter ends with the two of them returning to their usual intimate, crude friendship as they prepare to talk through everything Serena has avoided saying.
