Chapter 32
Overview
Back at the cabin, Serena and Koen confront both the ceremonial mating marks Irene had put on Serena and the emotional weight of their parents’ violent history. Serena then reveals the nest her Heat drove her to build and tells Koen she wants chosen intimacy, not memories shaped only by biological compulsion. Their first real kiss marks a shift from reluctant bond and crisis management toward a mutual romantic and sexual choice.
Summary
After a painful shower, Serena joins Koen in the living room still overheated from the advancing Heat. Koen reacts intensely to the green dye around Serena’s glands and explains that the markings resemble those used in mating ceremonies. Serena realizes Irene had her marked for that purpose, and Koen’s struggle to control his response makes clear that the marks strongly affect him.
The conversation turns from Serena’s embarrassment to the deeper reason she feels exposed: the revelation that Constantine killed Koen’s parents and that Koen killed Serena’s parents. Koen admits that he would still make the same choice, despite the damage it caused Serena, and says he would also endure Constantine’s abuse again if it led him to Serena. That exchange reframes their shared history as something painful but not fatal to what they might choose now.
Serena then brings Koen to her bedroom and shows him the nest she has been building under the influence of Heat. Koen recognizes the behavior as normal, though he jokingly admits his own instincts are less about building nests than destroying them. In showing him the nest, Serena understands that she made it for Koen and begins to speak openly about what she wants from him.
Serena tells Koen that helping her through Heat could cost him politically if the Assembly learns of it, and that she does not want her memories of him to be only biological need and his dutiful care. Serena asks for something chosen freely while she is still in control: real intimacy and a real kiss. Koen reassures Serena that he will not regret being with her, and they share their first deliberate kiss, which quickly deepens into a more urgent physical encounter.
As they begin exploring that attraction on the nest, Koen’s phone rings with a call from Lowe. Serena insists that Koen answer in case the call concerns Irene or urgent news, so Koen reluctantly steps away and gives Lowe a joking explanation. Safe in the nest that smells like Koen, Serena relaxes enough to fall into a deep, calm sleep.
