Chapter Eighteen
Overview
Rhys announces a politically fraught trip to the Court of Nightmares to secure Keir’s forces, forcing Mor to confront her father and exposing how badly the Night Court needs allies before the war with Hybern. Feyre commits to training for battle, Azriel agrees to teach her to fly, and Nesta finally offers cooperation on repairing the wall—but only in exchange for a promise of vengeance against Hybern and the queens.
When Nesta refuses to publicly recount her trauma to help sway the High Lords, Feyre is forced to confront both her sister’s limits and her own new role as High Lady. A later walk with Rhys deepens their partnership as they define how they will rule together, weigh the risks of Keir and Lucien, and recommit to fighting for both their court and their future.
Summary
At dinner, Rhys tells the group they must visit the Court of Nightmares to ask Keir and the Darkbringer legion to join the coming war. Mor immediately objects because Keir is her father and because the Hewn City has refused to fight in past wars, even when victory came at terrible cost. Rhys insists they need every possible ally, and Mor reluctantly agrees to attend, though the prospect clearly unsettles her and strains the room, especially with Azriel watching her distress.
Trying to shift the conversation, Feyre sets a training time with Cassian and then announces that she wants to learn to fly using Illyrian wings she can shape-shift. Cassian warns that true aerial combat takes years to master, but Rhys wants Feyre to gain any advantage she can. Azriel volunteers to teach her himself, explaining that learning as an older student is different and harder, which quietly recalls his own brutal childhood.
Feyre then turns the discussion toward Nesta’s powers. She suggests that because Nesta was Made by the Cauldron, Nesta may be able to help seal the holes in the wall that Hybern plans to widen. Amren offers to train Nesta and proposes taking her to the Court of Nightmares so she can practice around objects of power. Nesta asks instead why they do not simply kill the King of Hybern, then demands a bargain: if they promise to kill the king and the human queens by war’s end, she will help repair the wall, train with Amren, and go to the Hewn City.
When Feyre presses Nesta to testify at the upcoming meeting of the High Lords about what Hybern did to her, Nesta refuses absolutely. Feyre argues that Nesta’s account could persuade other courts to join them, but Nesta will not let her trauma be used publicly and fiercely warns them not to ask Elain either. She storms out, leaving Feyre shaken but with at least a partial commitment to help.
Later, Feyre and Rhys walk through Velaris and talk through the evening’s tensions. Feyre apologizes for snapping at him earlier, and together they agree on how to balance being mates, family, and co-rulers: they will present a united front publicly while still being honest with each other. Feyre warns Rhys not to wound Mor in his dealings with Keir, they discuss the risks of the High Lords’ meeting and the uncertain trustworthiness of Lucien, and they end by affirming that they will keep planning and fighting not just for the war, but for a shared future.
