Chapter Thirty One
Overview
Feyre chooses to flee downward into the library’s pit rather than risk the priestesses above, forcing Nesta into the darkness while Hybern’s Ravens pursue them. In the pit, Feyre learns more about the Cauldron’s punishment of the queens, realizes Elain’s warning was true, and makes a desperate bargain with the hidden creature below to save them. The creature kills the Ravens, and Rhys and Cassian arrive to extract Feyre and Nesta, turning the attack into a grim proof that Hybern can breach their wards and that Nesta remains a major target.
Summary
Trapped in the library with her magic suppressed by faebane, Feyre quickly weighs her choices and decides she cannot fight Hybern’s two Ravens directly or lead them upward toward the priestesses. After silently asking Nesta to trust her, Feyre insults the attackers and then drags Nesta deeper down into the black pit at the heart of the library, choosing the unknown horror below over the immediate danger behind them.
As Feyre and Nesta race through the dark, the Ravens taunt them with new information. They reveal that one of the mortal queens entered the Cauldron after seeing what it had done to Feyre and Nesta, and although she became immortal, the Cauldron punished her by stealing her youth. Feyre realizes Elain’s strange warning had been true, and the Ravens’ pursuit confirms that Hybern specifically wants Nesta because the Cauldron senses she took something from it.
When escape becomes impossible, Feyre begs Nesta to run toward the faint light while Feyre delays the Ravens. Feyre topples stacks to block their path, but the collapse also traps Feyre deeper in the pit. Lost in the darkness and nearly cornered, Feyre pleads for help and hears the hidden creature beneath the library speak to her, reminding Feyre that it knows of her earlier desire to bargain for the Bone Carver. The creature offers aid in exchange for company and stories of life.
With the Ravens closing in, Feyre accepts the bargain and asks the creature to kill them. When the attackers finally find Feyre, they look past her in absolute terror at what stands behind her. The creature tells Feyre to close her eyes, and Feyre hears only screams, bones breaking, and blood as it tears the Ravens apart.
Cassian reaches Feyre first and leads her away without letting her look. Rhys then arrives in a burst of fury powerful enough to shake the mountain, orders Cassian to get Feyre and Nesta out, and veils the scene in darkness before confronting what remains below. Cassian gathers both sisters and flies them upward, while the renewed screaming from the pit underscores both how narrowly they escaped and how dangerous the being beneath the library truly is.
