Chapter Twenty Eight
Overview
Feyre uses brutal training to manage the strain left by the previous night, while Azriel’s silence and Mor’s conversation with Feyre show how deeply Rhys’s bargain with Eris and Keir has unsettled their circle. At the same time, the first responses from the High Lords reveal cautious, conditional support rather than firm unity, underscoring how fragile their hoped-for alliance remains.
Madja’s examination of Elain brings no simple medical answer: Elain is not physically ill, but trauma and the Cauldron’s changes have left her altered in ways normal healing cannot reach. By directing Lucien to use the mating bond to sense what is happening, the chapter shifts attention toward whether Elain’s recovery may depend on bonds and understanding rather than conventional cures.
Summary
Determined to keep pushing despite her fear about the coming war, Feyre goes to the House of Wind for training. Cassian immediately notices that something is off in her mood and asks whether she wants an easier session, but Feyre chooses to be pushed hard so she can burn through her tension. Cassian admits that training helps him cope as well, especially after the previous night’s painful meeting.
Afterward, Azriel gives Feyre a flying lesson focused on air currents, downdrafts, and how temperature shapes the wind. He is even more withdrawn than usual, and when Feyre asks whether he has spoken to Mor since the confrontation, Azriel says no and shuts the subject down. His silence and repeated flexing of his scarred hand show that Mor’s reaction still weighs on him.
When Feyre returns to the town house, she finds Mor sorting through replies from the High Lords. Helion is willing to attend their meeting, Thesan agrees only if the gathering is held somewhere genuinely neutral and safe, and Kallias wants to bring armed guards because he still does not trust them after Under the Mountain. Spring, Autumn, and Summer have not replied, which raises the possibility that some courts may refuse to join the alliance at all.
Feyre and Mor then speak about the previous night’s bargain with Eris and Keir. Mor admits that she understands why Rhys made the deal and that she herself might have done the same to protect Feyre from Beron, but she is still hurt because Keir knew exactly what Velaris meant to her and used that knowledge to set the price. Mor also reveals that she and Rhys already spoke that morning, and although she is angry about the terms, she refuses to let men like Keir and Eris steal her joy or damage her bond with her family. The conversation leaves Feyre more aware of how war forces terrible choices on everyone.
Madja then arrives to examine Elain. The healer finds that Elain is physically sound apart from being too thin, but says she cannot enter Elain’s mind because Elain is Cauldron-Made and marked in ways ordinary Fae magic cannot penetrate. Madja believes Elain’s condition resembles the effects of trauma and transformation rather than a simple illness, and she cautions Feyre not to probe recklessly into places the Cauldron altered.
Downstairs, Madja advises that Lucien may be the best person to sense whether anything is truly wrong, because the mating bond acts as a bridge between souls. Nesta reacts sharply and demands another healer, but Feyre finally snaps back and insists that Lucien will try first before they decide on anything else. Mor offers to stay with Feyre and watch over the situation, while Lucien goes to compose himself before speaking with Elain.
