Chapter Seventy-Seven

Overview

Feyre refuses to accept Rhysand’s death and forces the surviving High Lords to attempt the same kind of resurrection that once remade her. With power contributed by every High Lord, including a final, unexpected gift from Tamlin, Rhysand returns to life unchanged in his power. Rhysand then reveals that Amren has also been saved from the Cauldron, though her return costs her the supernatural force that once defined her.

Summary

After Rhysand dies remaking the Cauldron, Feyre collapses into shock and grief beside his body. Mor, Azriel, Cassian, and the other High Lords gather, and Thesan tries to determine whether anything can be done, but he indicates that Rhysand is gone. Feyre realizes Rhysand had hidden the full cost of his choice so she would not stop him, and the broken remnants of their bond deepen her panic.

Refusing to accept Rhysand’s death, Feyre begs the High Lords to bring him back the way they once helped remake her. Helion warns that Feyre had been human and that the circumstances are different, but Feyre insists and is ready to force the issue with what power she has left. Tarquin is the first to act, offering a kernel of his power in honor of what Rhysand has given, and Helion, Kallias, and Thesan follow.

Beron hesitates until Mor threatens him, and he reluctantly adds his power as well. Feyre, as High Lady, then struggles to produce her own spark until Thesan explains how to summon it, and she lays that piece of herself on Rhysand’s throat. At that moment Tamlin arrives, sees what is happening, and after Feyre pleads with him, he quietly tells her to be happy before giving the final kernel of power.

Feyre holds to Rhysand’s body and silently begs him to stay, recalling how she first heard him, how she fell in love with him, and the life they still have left to live. The combined power finally works: Rhysand’s heart starts beating again, and he wakes to the astonishment and relief of everyone around him. He quickly confirms that, unlike Feyre’s resurrection, his own power remains fully his.

Once Feyre believes he is truly alive, Rhysand reveals that there is one more surprise: Amren is still in the Cauldron. Mor, Azriel, and Varian pull her out, and Rhysand explains that as the Cauldron was sealing, he reached for her and offered her the chance to return. Amren revives, but Feyre understands from her ordinary silver eyes that Amren has come back as a normal High Fae, having given up her ancient, terrible power.
