Chapter Thirteen

Overview

Feyre and Lucien's escape across the frozen border collapses into open battle when Eris corners them, wounds Feyre, and nearly drags her back to Autumn. Cassian and Azriel arrive in time to save her, and Feyre chooses political restraint over revenge by sparing Eris and his brothers.

The chapter's major shift comes when Feyre publicly reveals herself as the Night Court's High Lady, turning a private truth into a declaration with wartime consequences. Her rescue also reunites her with Mor and confirms Rhys has sensed her return and is racing home.

Summary

On the frozen lake at the Winter Court border, Eris begins melting a path through the ice while Lucien urges Feyre to run. As Lucien dodges arrows from his brothers and shields her when he can, Feyre uses her ice power to refreeze the lake ahead of them and tries to keep them moving toward shore. Before she can turn that advantage into escape, Eris appears ahead of them, one brother wounds Feyre with arrows, and Eris closes in while her injuries start healing.

Feyre blasts out blinding light and runs, but Eris winnows in front of her, beats her down, and drags her toward the shore with fire binding her wrists, ankles, and mouth. Lucien fights Eris's two brothers on the ice, but more Autumn sentries appear on land, making capture feel inevitable. Feyre starts to panic under Eris's control until Cassian crashes onto the ice and Azriel lands behind him, both fully healed and ready to fight.

Using the escape training Cassian drilled into her, Feyre twists free long enough to smash Eris in the face and roll away. Cassian immediately engages Eris, Azriel helps contain the other brothers, and Feyre uses her ice power to extinguish the fire restraints. Cassian drives a blade through Eris's gut, but Feyre stops Cassian and Azriel before they kill Beron's sons, realizing those deaths could harden Autumn against the Night Court in the coming war.

Feyre then drops her glamour and reveals the tattooed marks of her title and mating bond, declaring to Eris, his brothers, and the sentries that she is High Lady of the Night Court. The revelation shocks them, especially Lucien, and Feyre warns they will meet again on the battlefield. Cassian carries Feyre away while Azriel takes Lucien, and in flight Cassian and Feyre share an emotional reunion.

At the border of the Night Court's sacred territory, Feyre reunites with Mor. Mor explains that Rhys felt Feyre through the bond and is racing home, while Mor, Cassian, and Azriel were the closest ones able to respond. After learning Lucien fought against Eris, Mor judges him carefully and decides they should all go to the town house, where someone is waiting for Feyre.
