Daniel finally comes face-to-face with Nuria Monfort in her dim, orderly back room, unsettled by her presence but determined to press his advantage. Looking out the window for Fermín and finding no sign of him, Daniel confronts Nuria with what his friend discovered: the Fortuny-Carax apartment’s correspondence was diverted to a fake solicitors’ PO box, and Nuria’s name has been used for years to collect it.

Nuria abruptly tells Daniel to stop and accuses him of judging her without understanding. She demands to know who else has heard this and whether Daniel has told anyone, especially the police. When Daniel confirms the police have long followed him, Nuria immediately focuses on Inspector Fumero, alarmed and shaken.

Daniel escalates, claiming he has been to the Aldayas’ house, knows Jorge Aldaya is hiding there, and insists Aldaya murdered Julián Carax. Nuria presses Daniel on whether Fumero knows and whether Fumero followed him there, warning Daniel that he has no idea what he has set in motion.

Daniel accuses Nuria of lying for years to protect Carax’s murderer and helping erase Carax by shielding the man who burns his books. He also calls out Nuria’s story about her husband, saying the husband is neither imprisoned nor present. Nuria, bitter and exhausted, orders Daniel to leave the house and never return.

Daniel obeys and pauses only to see Nuria collapsed on the floor against the wall, all composure gone. He crosses the square with shame and confusion, repeating her warning to himself, and as he passes the church a gaunt priest silently blesses him.
