City of Shadows — Chapter 27

Overview

Daniel braves a violent storm to meet Bea inside the abandoned Aldaya summer house on Avenida del Tibidabo. Bea reveals she traced the property through her father’s real-estate firm and learned its real name, The Angel of Mist, linking Daniel’s Carax investigation directly to a physical place. She shares what the firm’s secretary uncovered: the Aldayas’ official mansion was demolished, and this house was bought cheaply amid rumors it was cursed, deepening the mystery around the Aldaya past.

Summary

A storm breaks early as Daniel takes Line 22 toward Avenida del Tibidabo. Without an umbrella, Daniel is dropped off near the end of Calle Balmes and runs through the downpour toward the Aldaya property, where the avenue’s mansions blur behind sheets of rain.

Daniel slips through a small gate door swinging in the wind and crosses the neglected grounds, noticing toppled statues and an avenging angel dumped into a fountain, its accusing finger pointing toward the house. The carved oak front door stands ajar, and Daniel enters a vast, shadowy hall lit by a single candle.

Bea is waiting inside and tells Daniel to lock the door. Feeling Daniel’s trembling, Bea leads Daniel into a ruined gallery room and lights a fire with practiced confidence, then gives Daniel a clean blanket to warm up as Daniel presses for an explanation.

Bea reveals that the “Aldaya mansion” has a name: The Angel of Mist. Bea explains that her father’s firm has tried to sell the property for fifteen years, and that after hearing Daniel’s account of Julián Carax and Penélope Aldaya, Bea realized the connection and went to her father’s office to ask questions.

From the firm’s secretary, Casasús, Bea learned the house’s history: it was not the Aldayas’ official residence but a summer home. Bea recounts that the Aldayas’ main house—designed by Puig i Cadafalch for Simón Aldaya in 1896—was demolished in 1925 for apartments, and that Ricardo Aldaya bought this summer residence cheaply from fearful sellers because the house had a reputation for being cursed.
