City of Shadows — Chapter 21

Overview

Daniel meets Bea at the university and challenges her claim that she will marry Pablo, pushing her to admit she is uncertain and may be running away. He draws her closer by confessing the full story of Julián Carax and the book burnings, then takes her into the Cemetery of Forgotten Books to show her the hidden novel that started everything.

Bea chooses her own book from the labyrinth, and Daniel kisses her, marking a decisive turn from investigation into emotional entanglement. The chapter ends with their relationship unresolved but newly real, raising the stakes for Daniel as Bea remains tied to Pablo and her family.

Summary

At dusk Daniel arrives at the university cloister, fearing Beatriz (Bea) may have set him up, but he finds her waiting. Bea insists she is still going to marry Pablo and leave for El Ferrol, yet Daniel presses her to admit whether she truly loves Pablo or is simply fleeing her family. After a tense exchange, Bea confesses she does not know.

They leave together and walk the city, speaking cautiously about Bea’s brother, Tomás, and about how it can feel easier to confide in a stranger. Daniel hints that he intends to “solve” the mystery of Bea, and they stop in a café for coffee and food. Daniel tells Bea he will show her part of a real story about books—accursed books, betrayal, and lost love—framing it as something that begins and ends in a “cemetery.”

Daniel then recounts his experiences: discovering the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, reading The Shadow of the Wind, meeting the faceless man, and keeping Penélope Aldaya’s letter. He also admits personal vulnerabilities, including his loneliness and confusion after Nuria Monfort’s earlier kiss. Moved, Bea asks Daniel to stop talking and take her to the place.

In the night, Daniel brings Bea to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and persuades the keeper, Isaac Monfort, to let them in, despite Isaac’s suspicion and irritation. Daniel guides Bea through the labyrinth to the hidden copy of The Shadow of the Wind and introduces Julián Carax through the book itself, but refuses to let Bea take that particular volume.

Bea selects another book—Tess of the d’Urbervilles—and describes it as if it had been waiting for her. Overwhelmed, Daniel kisses Bea. Near midnight, they reach Bea’s building, where both hesitate and speak uncertainly about seeing each other again; Bea admits she lied earlier about not wanting to meet. Daniel leaves filled with hope, convinced the night and the city have changed with what has begun between them.
