City of Shadows — Chapter 23
Overview
Daniel spends the day desperately waiting for Bea, while Fermín pushes him to act decisively in love rather than hesitate. Tomás arrives with alarming news: Bea’s father is enraged over Bea’s late night and is determined to punish whoever she was with. Daniel admits to Tomás that Bea was with him, and Tomás leaves Daniel with a firm warning not to hurt his sister, raising the stakes around their secret relationship.
Summary
On Saturday, Daniel waits anxiously behind the counter of Sempere & Sons, hoping Bea will appear or call. Each ring of the phone raises his hopes, but as the day drags on and Daniel’s father is out of the shop, Daniel sinks into despair.
Fermín, alone with Daniel, delivers a blunt lecture on romance: Daniel must take the initiative because hesitating gives Bea time to think and withdraw. Fermín frames courtship as a performance where Daniel has to lead, even while Daniel fears Bea may never want to see him again.
Tomás Aguilar arrives looking grim, and over coffee explains the crisis at home: Bea came in very late the night before, refused to say where she had been, and their father raged until dawn, insulting her and threatening to send her away or throw her out if she ever returned pregnant. That morning Bea locked herself in her room while their father sat in the dining room, stewing and vowing to find the man responsible and hurt him.
After Fermín excuses himself to go to the baker, Daniel tells Tomás the truth: Bea was with Daniel the previous night. Tomás reacts with disbelief and then restrained seriousness, warning Daniel that Daniel does not really know Bea and asking—implicitly—whether Daniel would stop if asked. As Tomás leaves, he gives Daniel a single, clear demand: do not hurt Bea, leaving Daniel shaken even after Fermín returns with pastries.
