City of Shadows — Chapter 29
Overview
Bea pulls away from Daniel after their night at the Aldaya mansion, refusing declarations of love and limiting their next contact to a secret Tuesday meeting. The next morning, Fermín uncovers that Nuria Monfort’s claim about her husband Miquel Moliner being imprisoned is false, forcing Daniel and Fermín to revise their investigation. They decide to pursue a new lead by infiltrating the ominous Hospice of Santa Lucía to question the former governess.
Summary
Daniel and Bea leave the Aldaya mansion after the storm. Bea keeps Daniel at an emotional distance as they walk toward Balmes, and the intimacy from inside the house seems to fade as they return to the city streets.
At a taxi rank, Bea abruptly insists they separate. When Daniel says he loves her, Bea stops his words with her hand and only fixes their next meeting: Tuesday at six. Bea disappears in a taxi, leaving Daniel feeling as if she has become a stranger again.
Daniel cannot sleep until dawn. Fermín wakes him at the bookshop and, after teasing Daniel about Bea, reveals he investigated Nuria Monfort’s story: according to Fermín’s underworld contacts, nobody named Miquel Moliner has been an inmate or presence in Barcelona’s prisons for at least ten years.
Fermín presses Daniel to accept that Nuria lied and argues they must change tactics. Fermín proposes a “back door” approach by visiting the former governess mentioned by the priest—an old woman now in the Hospice of Santa Lucía.
After closing the shop early and drawing Daniel’s father’s suspicion, Daniel and Fermín set out. Fermín describes Santa Lucía as a secretive, grim institution housed in an ancient palace with a lurid past as “The Tenebrarium,” run by the con man Laszlo de Vicherny (Baltasar Deulofeu), before becoming a hospice for abandoned, dying elderly; as they arrive on Calle Moncada, a bitter stench confirms they have reached their destination.
