What You Can’t Change

Overview

In a ruined barn, Alex refuses to abandon Sunny, steals a horse for their escape, and impulsively kisses her, deepening their bond under pressure. Sabbas's hunters quickly find them, but Vigga and Brother Diaz arrive in time to kill the attackers and reunite the separated companions. The rescue also brings a grim warning: Duke Sabbas, his sorcerers, and his Dane-Wolf are close behind.

Summary

Alex drags the badly injured Sunny into an abandoned barn to hide after their escape from the burning town. Sunny, struggling with severe pain in her ribs, tells Alex to leave her behind and continue toward Troy, arguing that Alex still has a mission and that Sunny will only slow her down. Alex refuses because Sunny has saved her too many times, and because Alex cannot accept doing nothing while Sunny suffers.

When Sunny presses Alex for a plan, Alex decides to go back and steal a horse from a nearby farm. Before leaving, Alex tells Sunny to trust her, then kisses Sunny, revealing feelings that had been building beneath their hard banter. Sunny is left alone overnight, half-expecting that Alex has finally abandoned her, but Alex returns in the morning with a stolen horse and a renewed determination to get Sunny moving.

As Alex helps Sunny toward the horse, three of Duke Sabbas's hunters arrive and trap them in the barn. Alex and Sunny are outnumbered, out-armed, and Sunny is too hurt to fight effectively, so Alex tries to hold the killers' attention. Unseen by the hunters, Vigga slips in behind them.

While Alex distracts the hunters with a false promise of buried jewels, Vigga silently strangles the broken-nosed woman. When greed keeps the remaining two men focused on Alex, Vigga strikes again, driving a dagger into the bald man's skull and then shattering the big man's arms in close combat. Brother Diaz bursts in just after the fight is effectively won, relieved to find Alex and Sunny alive.

Once the immediate danger passes, Sunny nearly collapses from pain and exhaustion. The surviving hunter begs for his life by offering information, revealing that Duke Sabbas is close behind with sorcerers and a Dane-Wolf. Brother Diaz tries to spare the prisoner long enough to use him as a messenger, but Vigga ignores the spirit of the order and kills him anyway, leaving the group reunited but with proof that Sabbas's pursuit is tightening.
