No Smiles at the Monastery
Overview
The Chapel seeks help in Venice from Frigo, one of Baptiste's criminal contacts, but finds him wary and heavily prepared for betrayal. Frigo agrees to provide passage to Troy only if the group first retrieves a mysterious white box from a cursed, magically protected house once owned by an illusionist. The chapter shifts the story from escape and recovery into a dangerous side mission, while Sunny's observations underline both the group's constant peril and her quiet attachment to them.
Summary
The Chapel reaches a heavily guarded former monastery in Venice and is admitted by Baptiste's contact, Marangon. From Sunny's hidden perspective, the place feels tense and hostile: armed men watch every doorway, no one smiles, and Alex keeps her head down while the group is led deeper inside. As Sunny moves invisibly among them, she reflects on her awkward place in the world and on the small, unnoticed ways she tries to care for the Chapel like a family.
In a chapel converted into a kitchen, the group meets Frigo, a baker who is also a criminal boss, and his sharp-tongued granddaughter. Baptiste greets Frigo warmly, but Frigo responds coldly, making clear that he expects Baptiste to want something. While Baptiste circles toward her request, Sunny scouts the room and discovers hidden knife-men, archers in the gallery, and more guards outside, then quietly warns Jakob that Frigo has prepared for violence if negotiations fail.
Frigo studies the visitors one by one, identifying Vigga as the werewolf, Baron Rikard as the vampire, and Jakob by reputation. He questions Alex and mocks Balthazar, but the real business emerges when Baptiste asks for passage to Troy for herself and her companions. Frigo refuses to help for free and instead offers a bargain.
Frigo wants the Chapel to retrieve a white box marked with a star from a house that once belonged to an illusionist. According to Frigo, his own people entered the house but never returned, and Venice believes the place is cursed. When Balthazar asks how the house is protected, Frigo gives no useful explanation, leaving the Chapel to infer that dangerous magic is involved.
Jakob takes control of the negotiation and confirms the terms: if the Chapel brings Frigo the box, Frigo will arrange their passage to Troy. Frigo agrees, offers them bread, and has Marangon see to whatever equipment they need. The group leaves with a new mission before they can continue east, and Sunny slips out after them, quietly straightening a knife left near the altar on her way.
