Jakob attacks Sabbas's men by surprise in the graveyard, cutting through disoriented hunters while Balthazar's risen dead add to the panic. Riding Count Radosav's warhorse, Jakob drives straight into the monastery yard, where he reunites with Alex, Brother Diaz, Balthazar, and Baptiste. The reunion is brief, because Sabbas's surviving men recover quickly and press the attack into another desperate last stand.

Outside, Sunny hides in a grave to recover her breath and watches Sabbas order his men forward while the twin sorceresses begin working together, stirring earth and stone into a deadly storm. Sunny slips into the courtyard behind the attackers, disrupts their movements, and repeatedly protects the others. She stops a crossbowman from shooting Alex, helps Jakob and Baptiste break the hunters' assault around the cloister, then climbs onto the ruined colonnade and starts pelting the attackers from above. One stone strikes a sorceress, but the other answers with a blast that tears the structure apart, sending Sunny crashing into nettles and leaving her separated from the group.

Jakob, Alex, Brother Diaz, Baptiste, and Balthazar retreat into the abbey infirmary and try to barricade the failing door. While Jakob holds the entrance, Balthazar becomes fascinated by the twins' linked use of earth and air magic and suspects their powers challenge everything he has learned about the elements. He raises the plague-dead from the infirmary beds to defend them, but the corpses are too dried and broken to be useful. When the twins begin cracking the walls apart and bringing the building down, the group abandons the room before the masonry buries them.

The survivors flee into the ruined church, whose back end has already collapsed over a cliff. As dust and rubble pour from the collapsing infirmary behind them, Alex leads the way across the unstable floor near the drop. A section gives way beneath Alex, and Brother Diaz lunges after her and catches her wrist as he starts sliding over the edge himself. Baptiste grabs Diaz, Balthazar braces Baptiste, and together they haul Alex back onto solid ground just before Diaz's torn trousers give way completely.

After the rescue, the group collapses beside the altar with nowhere safe left to run. Jakob backs toward them with his shield raised as Sabbas's hunters enter through the church's main door, followed by the twin sorceresses and Sabbas himself. With the cliff behind the altar and armed enemies in front of them, the Chapel is cornered once again, and Sabbas mocks their failed escape by telling them they have run out of road.
