Too Much Trouble
Overview
Jakob and Baptiste trade the box to Frigo in return for a boat to Troy, securing the group’s next step while underlining how little trust exists on any side. After the others leave, Frigo reveals that he detected Sunny hiding in the bakery and shows that information, not baking, is his real trade. His offer of work and his blunt reading of Sunny’s loneliness give the chapter its deeper shift, exposing an emotional vulnerability just as Frigo ominously predicts trouble ahead in Troy.
Summary
At Frigo’s bakery, Jakob and Baptiste complete the bargain that will get the group to Troy. Frigo treats the exchange with cynical politeness, openly admitting that people only care about getting what they want. Jakob delays handing over the box because he fears Frigo may betray them, but Frigo offers no reassurance beyond his reputation and reminds them they have no better option. Pressed by circumstance, Jakob gives up the box, and Frigo confirms that a boat is waiting for them.
After the others leave, the room falls quiet until Frigo tells the hidden Sunny to come out. Sunny realizes Frigo has detected her despite her stealth and drops down from her hiding place. Frigo’s granddaughter is startled to discover that Sunny is an elf, but Frigo is unsurprised. When Sunny asks how he knew she was there, Frigo explains that his real trade is information, and that all his other businesses exist to help him learn things.
The conversation turns personal as Frigo offers Sunny work, suggesting he could always use someone with her talents. Sunny resists the offer and claims she may be happy where she is, but Frigo studies her and rejects that idea. His ability to read her unsettles Sunny more than being discovered did. Frigo’s insight shifts the scene from a practical exchange to a moment of uncomfortable emotional exposure.
Frigo’s granddaughter, curious and rude, asks to see Sunny’s elf ears, and Sunny snaps back at her. Frigo then predicts that the journey to Troy will not end well, reinforcing a sense of danger around the group’s next move. Before returning to his dough, he tells Sunny that no one is really happy where they are and that everyone is lonely. The chapter ends with Sunny silently affected by how accurately Frigo has seen her.
