Good Givers

Overview

While resting in a village, the party briefly finds relief in a traveling play, and Sunny’s unspoken feelings for Alex become more painful and obvious. A discussion with the actors draws out Brother Diaz’s discomfort with harsh religious judgment and frames hypocrisy, rather than desire alone, as the chapter’s moral focus. The chapter ends with a serious warning: Sabbas has recently passed through, openly searching for Princess Alexia, proving that danger is closing in on them.

Summary

In a village near plague-cursed Kalyatta, the party watches a traveling religious comedy in which a sinful Pope is condemned by the Patriarch of Troy. Alex enjoys the performance and explains to Sunny why players once fascinated her: theater offers escape, movement, belonging, and the chance to pretend to be someone else. While they watch, Sunny privately struggles with her unresolved feelings after Alex kissed her, wanting to reach out but feeling trapped by shyness and uncertainty.

Vigga interrupts the moment by bringing more skewered meat, and the group falls into rough joking about the food, morality, and the play’s message. Sunny stays withdrawn, hiding under her hood, while Alex continues to banter. The scene shows the group briefly relaxing, but Sunny remains painfully aware of the distance between herself and Alex.

After the play ends, Alex gives the actors a generous donation. Speaking with the performers, Brother Diaz questions the harsh moral of their play and argues that a good God should be forgiving rather than vengeful. The actors answer that the real sin being punished is hypocrisy: not desire itself, but preaching virtue while practicing the opposite. This leaves Diaz thoughtful and uneasy.

The conversation then turns dangerous when the woman who played the Pope mentions a recent traveler in a golden cloak named Sabbas. She says Sabbas was a generous patron who was searching for a particular girl: Princess Alexia Pyrogennetos, long-lost heir to the throne of Troy. Alex tries to deflect the question with humor, but the revelation confirms that their pursuers are close behind and that Alex’s true identity remains an immediate threat to the whole group.
