The Good Meat
Overview
Unleashed from the wagon, Vigga reveals herself as a devastating werewolf and annihilates the attackers in the inn yard, saving Diaz and Alexia through sheer terror and violence. Jakob then rises despite his apparent death and brings her back under control, exposing yet another impossible truth about the Chapel's members. Baron Rikard openly confirms both Vigga's nature and his own vampirism, forcing Brother Diaz to confront the full monstrous reality of the company he now leads.
Summary
Released from the wagon, Vigga throws herself into slaughter with ecstatic hunger. In a feral, half-mad state, she tears through the beast-warriors in the inn yard, ripping apart a bull-headed fighter, a pig-headed woman, a cat-eyed soldier, and others. Vigga keeps searching for the "good meat," but most of what she devours disgusts her, and her rage grows as the hunger still burns inside her.
Vigga attacks everything in reach, including horses and armored men, reducing the enemy force to panic and ruin. She finally crushes the head of a shining armored fighter, and that kill seems to lessen the worst of her hunger. As the blood frenzy ebbs, Vigga notices Brother Diaz kneeling beside the terrified Princess Alexia and turns toward them, enraged by Diaz's prayers and ready to kill again.
The scene shifts as Brother Diaz, frozen with terror, sees the beast up close and believes death is certain. At the last moment, Jakob of Thorn calls out to Vigga. Though Marcian killed Jakob earlier and arrows still stick from his body, Jakob stands upright and rebukes Vigga like a disobedient subordinate, forcing her to retreat from Diaz and Alexia.
Under Jakob's command, Vigga changes from monstrous wolf-shape into a huge, naked, blood-smeared woman covered in warning tattoos. Crying, complaining of thirst, pain, and the wagon, Vigga vomits up blood, offal, and metal from what she has eaten. Alexia notices Jakob's impossible condition, and Brother Diaz, horrified, asks what Vigga is.
Baron Rikard then calmly emerges from the inn and identifies Vigga as a true Norse werewolf. Brother Diaz also realizes Rikard is a vampire and sees that feeding has made the baron look younger. When Diaz struggles to comprehend the carnage, Rikard and the elf dryly imply that such monstrosities are ordinary for the Chapel of the Holy Expediency, confirming that Diaz's companions are even more unnatural than he feared.
