Alex wakes on a beach after the galley’s destruction, coughing up seawater and realizing Sunny has dragged her ashore. Alex is battered and fears serious injury, but Sunny calmly checks her face and tells her the damage is mostly bruising rather than a broken nose.

Because they have nothing, Sunny decides they should salvage whatever has washed up from the wreck. Alex helps uncover a chest beneath rope and sailcloth, breaks it open, and finds Constans’s ornate military jacket inside. While putting it on, Alex and Sunny talk about the likely fate of Constans and Jakob, with Sunny guessing Constans is dead and warning that even Jakob’s survival is uncertain after the shipwreck.

The brief pause ends when Sunny notices people approaching along the shore. She immediately pulls Alex toward the dunes to hide, and Alex, still weak and frightened, follows. From cover, they see a group of eight armed figures examining the wreckage they left behind.

Sunny listens to the searchers and realizes they are not interested only in salvage. The group mentions that "the Dane" is coming, seems anxious about him, and begins looking beyond the chest, which makes Alex suspect they are hunting her specifically.

Once Sunny sees the searchers taking interest in Alex’s tracks, hesitation becomes too dangerous. Sunny urges immediate flight, and Alex runs with her despite exhaustion, ending the chapter with both women fleeing inland from a new pursuit almost as soon as Alex has survived the sea.
