Chapter Sixty-Six
Overview
With Elain newly Made and Lucien declaring she is his mate, Feyre realizes brute resistance has failed and turns to deception. She secretly uses her spell-breaking power to tear open Hybern’s wards, then pretends Rhys had enslaved her so Tamlin will reclaim her and demand her sisters’ release. The gambit creates a chance for the Night Court to escape, but Hybern seals the performance by brutally severing Feyre’s bond to Rhys.
Summary
Lucien’s claim that Elain is his mate shocks the room, and Nesta immediately rejects it and shields her sister. The King of Hybern uses Elain and Nesta’s survival to tempt the human queens into being Made, while Feyre, furious and sick with guilt over failing both her sisters and the Night Court, realizes that open resistance will not save anyone. When Rhys rises as if he might offer another bargain, Feyre decides instead to make herself the sacrifice.
Feyre drops to the floor as though the king’s spell is crushing her, then unleashes a burst of white light from her curse-breaking power. The flash freezes everyone, but Feyre uses it as cover to study Hybern’s magic and sever the castle wards at their weak points. Afterward, Feyre collapses and begins acting confused and terrified, calling for Tamlin and recoiling from Rhys as if she has just awakened from his control.
Because the king’s power blocks her bond with Rhys, Feyre cannot explain the plan directly, so she commits fully to the deception. Feyre begs Hybern to break Rhys’s bargain and mating bond, claims Rhys forced them on her, and pleads with Tamlin to take her home and let her sisters go. Mor and Cassian realize what Feyre is doing and help sell the lie, while Tamlin’s protectiveness and lingering love make him accept Feyre’s performance as truth.
Tamlin orders Hybern to free Feyre from Rhys and release Nesta and Elain, despite Jurian’s objections. Rhys keeps saying no, both because the bond matters to him and because he must play his part, but Hybern agrees and strikes Feyre with his power. Feyre and Rhys both collapse in agony as the magic tears through them, and the chapter ends with the bond between them snapping apart.
