Chapter Fifty-Nine
Overview
Feyre personally hunts down and kills the Attor above Velaris, turning the battle into an act of vengeance for the harms done to Rhysand, Clare, and herself. After escaping the fatal impact, she reunites with Rhysand as his power wipes out the last threat in the area. The chapter marks both the end of this immediate assault and Feyre's emergence as a true defender of Velaris.
Summary
Feyre winnows across the rooftops of Velaris with poisoned ash arrows, ignoring Rhysand's mental call so she can focus on one goal: killing the Attor herself. While Rhysand's vast darkness devours enemy soldiers across the city, Feyre tracks the Attor through their mental tether and winnows directly above it in the sky.
Feyre attacks at once, driving an ash arrow through each of the Attor's wings and locking herself around it in burning flame. As they plunge toward the city in free fall, the Attor cannot escape her grip or fly because the poison and the arrows have ruined its wings.
During the descent, Feyre stabs the Attor repeatedly. She names her reasons as she does it: vengeance for Rhysand, for Clare, and for herself. The attack turns personal and final, and when the ground rises to meet them, Feyre leaves her dagger in the Attor and winnows away at the last possible instant.
The Attor smashes into the cobblestones and is reduced to a broken mass of blood, armor, and burned flesh. Feyre collapses against a nearby building, exhausted and shaken, as Rhysand's darkness reaches her side of the river and clears out any remaining hidden enemies.
When the darkness lifts, Rhysand comes to Feyre, touches her face, and kisses her, grounding them both after the violence. Around them, the city mourns but the immediate terror has ended. Rhysand calls Feyre "Cursebreaker, the Defender of the Rainbow," and holds her while she sobs and begins to face the aftermath of the battle.
