Chapter Thirty One

Overview

As Feyre continues training with Cassian and experimenting with her new powers, Rhys arrives with long-awaited news: the Summer Court has invited them, and Feyre, Rhys, and Amren will go. The trip matters because it will put Feyre before another court as part of the Night Court and gives them a chance to steal the Book of Breathings, despite the political risk. At the same time, the chapter sharpens quiet tensions around Mor, Cassian, and Azriel and ends by showing Feyre and Rhys growing more openly playful and intimate with each other.

Summary

Four days after discovering she can summon Autumn Court fire, Feyre continues training on the House of Wind roof with Cassian while Rhys helps her practice her powers afterward. Feyre has still not managed to winnow again, and she notes that no word has come from either the Summer Court or the Spring Court. Azriel is also making no progress infiltrating the human queens’ circles, which has left him colder and quieter.

During training, Amren lounges nearby and needles Cassian, and Mor arrives to wait for Rhys. Cassian presses Mor about where she disappeared to after a recent night at Rita’s, revealing tension connected to Azriel as well as Mor. Feyre recalls that at Rita’s she and Azriel had watched Rhys politely turn away every offer of company, and she begins wondering more directly about Rhys’s life and desires after Amarantha.

Rhys interrupts the sparring session with news that the Summer Court has finally invited them. He announces that he, Feyre, and Amren will leave the next day. Cassian objects because the trip could be a trap, because the Summer Court distrusts them, and because taking Feyre openly to another court will signal that she belongs with the Night Court. Rhys refuses to bring Cassian because Cassian is banned there and is needed in the human realm, while Amren is useful both as a deterrent and because her eye for treasure may help them find the Book of Breathings they intend to steal.

After the others fall silent, Feyre follows Rhys inside and asks whether he has prepared any more surprises for the trip. Their conversation turns teasing and flirtatious, echoing the note-passing between them from Rita’s. Feyre challenges Rhys by saying he has not been able to stay away from her since Calanmai, and Rhys responds in kind before vanishing into shadow, leaving their growing intimacy and the coming Summer Court mission hanging together as the chapter’s final note.
