Chapter Twenty Three
Overview
Feyre returns to her family’s estate as Fae and finally tells Nesta and Elain what happened Under the Mountain, along with Hybern’s looming threat. She asks to use their home for secret meetings with the mortal queens, and though Nesta fiercely resists because of the danger to Elain and their social standing, Elain persuades her to help. The chapter secures a crucial human foothold for Feyre’s mission while exposing how far she has grown from her old life and how damaged her bond with Tamlin has become.
Summary
Feyre returns to her family’s estate in the mortal lands one year after killing Andras. Rhysand’s glamours hide Rhysand, Cassian, and Azriel while Feyre approaches the house alone, but Mrs. Laurent immediately senses something unnatural about her. Elain recognizes Feyre and breaks down in tears, and Nesta orders Feyre admitted, though both sisters stare at her as if she has come back from the dead.
Inside, Feyre feels alien in the mortal house and painfully aware of how much she has changed. After confirming that their father is away in Neva, Feyre removes her hood and shows Elain and Nesta that she is now Fae. Feyre then tells them about Under the Mountain, Amarantha, her death and remaking, and the danger posed by Hybern, before explaining that she needs their estate as a secret meeting place for the mortal queens and any High Fae who must come with her.
Nesta refuses at first, saying she will not allow Fae into her house or near Elain. Feyre learns that Elain is engaged to Graysen, the son of a lord whose family actively hunts Fae, which makes the request even more dangerous for the sisters’ reputation and safety. When Feyre asks whether Nesta also means to reject her, Nesta’s silence makes clear how deeply divided they still are.
Elain changes the conversation by arguing that if they do not help Feyre, her wedding and their status will not matter because Hybern will destroy mortal protections anyway. Elain proposes sending the servants away and hiding all future meetings, and she reminds Nesta that Feyre spent years sacrificing for the family. Faced with Elain’s resolve and Feyre’s urgency, Nesta agrees to clear the house at once, and Elain leaves to make the arrangements.
Left alone with Nesta, Feyre asks about Graysen and learns that he is kind, though Nesta distrusts his father and the fortresslike estate around him. Their talk turns to Tamlin, and Feyre admits that what happened Under the Mountain broke him so badly that his need to protect her became another prison. When Nesta notes that Feyre now belongs to a new court, Feyre asks if Nesta would like to meet the people who came with her, opening the way for her mortal family to connect with her new life.
