Chapter Twelve

Overview

Feyre's situation at the Spring Court turns from suffocating to openly imprisoning. After her powers begin surfacing and Tamlin still refuses to let her train, he seals her inside the manor rather than allow her any agency or risk. The resulting panic attack destroys the last illusion of safety between them, and Mor and Rhys intervene to remove Feyre, marking a decisive break in her life with Tamlin.

Summary

Back at the Spring Court, Feyre is kept close to the house while Tamlin and Lucien deal with an unnamed threat on their lands. Ianthe returns to stay with Feyre, and the emptied manor becomes oppressively silent. When Tamlin comes back after eight days, Feyre briefly loses control and her nails turn into claws. Lucien notices, quietly confirms that Feyre's powers are emerging, and promises to ask Tamlin again to let her train.

Later, Feyre overhears Tamlin, Lucien, and Ianthe arguing. Ianthe warns that if other High Lords learn Feyre carries pieces of their power, they may kill her or try to use her for breeding. Lucien argues that secrecy will not truly protect her and begs Tamlin to let Feyre train so she can defend herself. Tamlin refuses, choosing concealment over preparation, and his anger shakes the house.

The next day, Feyre, desperate to escape the suffocating quiet and do something useful, asks to accompany Tamlin and Lucien when they leave for trouble on the western sea border near Hybern. Tamlin says it is too dangerous and then harshly tells Feyre that her untrained abilities make her a liability. When Feyre insists on coming anyway, Tamlin walks out and seals the entire house with a magical shield that prevents only Feyre from leaving.

Realizing Tamlin has trapped her inside, Feyre panics. She tries the door and windows, but every exit is blocked. The confinement triggers her memories of imprisonment Under the Mountain, and she collapses into a full breakdown, unable to breathe or think clearly. In the surge of uncontrolled power around her, the engagement ring Tamlin gave her melts away.

Alis calls for help, and Mor arrives with Rhysand's aid after Rhys easily breaks Tamlin's shield. Mor carries Feyre out despite the unconscious guards, repeatedly reminding Feyre that she is free. Outside, Mor hands Feyre to Rhys, who soothes her panic with his power as they depart, ending the chapter with Feyre being taken from the prison Tamlin made of the Spring Court.
