Chapter Twenty Four
Overview
Rhysand, Cassian, and Azriel finally meet Nesta and Elain, and the dinner exposes the fear, resentment, and guilt still shaping Feyre’s family. Despite the hostility, Nesta agrees to send a letter to the mortal queens and to host them if they come, moving the larger mission forward. The chapter also deepens Rhysand’s protectiveness of Feyre and quietly strengthens the trust between them through private honesty afterward.
Summary
After Feyre secures Nesta and Elain’s agreement, Elain quietly persuades the household staff to pack and leave, paying them to hasten their departure. Mrs. Laurent is the last to go and promises silence. Once the house is empty, Rhysand, Cassian, and Azriel arrive, and Feyre brings them inside while carrying the emotional weight of returning to her family home and thinking about Tamlin’s past kindness, his failures after Under the Mountain, and her father’s absence at a meeting about the threat from across the Wall.
Feyre introduces the three Night Court males to her sisters in the dining room. The meeting is immediately strained: Elain is frightened but polite, while Nesta places herself between Elain and the newcomers and then takes command of the dinner. The awkward meal becomes more uncomfortable when Nesta notices Feyre struggling with human food and challenges whether Feyre can still live as she once did, forcing Feyre to defensively assert that becoming Fae did not make her lesser or weak.
The tension escalates when Cassian openly condemns Nesta for allowing Feyre to hunt alone as a child and reminds her that Feyre already died once to save Prythian and is risking herself again to protect her family. Elain, trying to repair the damage, admits that both sisters failed Feyre and explains that fear and human prejudice against faeries shaped their reactions. Elain’s mention of Clare Beddor visibly affects Rhysand, and Azriel responds to Elain with calm courtesy, helping the conversation settle enough for Feyre to ask everyone to start over.
With tempers somewhat controlled, the dinner shifts into practical discussion. Elain asks Azriel about flying, and the group briefly explains the difference between High Fae and Illyrians, as well as the injustice hidden inside the term “lesser faeries.” Nesta then returns the conversation to business, insisting that the letter to the mortal queens be written that night and warning that the queens’ prejudice may be even stronger than her own. Rhysand, Cassian, Azriel, and Feyre spend hours drafting a letter that is respectful but forceful, and the group decides to stay overnight because Rhysand does not trust human territory, weak magic across the Wall, or the danger implied by Elain’s iron engagement ring.
Late that night, Feyre and Rhysand speak privately after the letter is finished. Their conversation turns from teasing about Nesta, Cassian, and the rest of the Inner Circle to darker truths: Rhysand admits that dinner disturbed him because seeing Feyre’s sisters made him fully confront how young and unprotected Feyre had been, and Feyre acknowledges that part of her still resents them as well. Rhysand also reveals that Feyre is officially being paid as part of his court and has her own bank account and credit in Velaris, giving her a degree of independence. When Feyre tells him that her birthday is on the Winter Solstice and that she let it pass unnoticed, the chapter ends on a gentler note as they share a laugh over who would win in a true clash between Nesta and Cassian.
