Chapter Forty-Six

Overview

Nesta’s anger at being excluded from the truth about her own power drives her to confront Amren, but the fight escalates into a far more devastating betrayal. In the middle of that argument, Nesta reveals to Feyre that her pregnancy is likely fatal and that Rhys and the others have been hiding it from her. The disclosure shatters Feyre, leaves Nesta horrified by what she has done, and pushes Rhys to the brink, setting up a dangerous rupture within the Night Court.

Summary

Blinded by fury after learning that the Inner Circle debated withholding the truth about her Made weapons and powers, Nesta races into Velaris and goes straight to Amren’s loft. She smashes through the warded door and interrupts Amren and Varian in bed, then orders Varian out so she can confront Amren alone. Nesta accuses Amren of voting against telling her what she can do, and the argument quickly turns personal.

Amren answers with cold anger, saying Nesta has done nothing to prove she can handle such dangerous power and reminding Nesta that she rejected Amren’s earlier attempts to help her learn control. Nesta insists the real betrayal was Amren choosing Feyre over her, but Amren rejects that framing and says Nesta has twisted other people’s loyalty and concern into weapons. When Nesta calls Amren her friend, Amren cuts back that Nesta does not understand friendship, deepening Nesta’s hurt.

Feyre then arrives at the apartment, still in paint-splattered clothes, and tries to stop the confrontation. She tells Nesta to return to the House and tries to calm both sides, but Nesta’s rage shifts toward the wider secrecy around her family. After mocking the deference shown to Amren and Rhys, Nesta asks whether Feyre has been told that her pregnancy will kill her and her child because the baby’s Illyrian wings will not fit through Feyre’s body during labor.

The revelation shocks Feyre. She realizes Madja and Rhys had concealed the full truth, and Nesta drives the wound deeper by saying Rhys knew for weeks and still kept silent. Feyre, terrified and heartbroken, asks Amren to confirm whether they all knew, and Amren admits they did not want to frighten her. Seeing Feyre break down as she touches her stomach, Nesta finally understands that she has gone too far, and her rage collapses into horror and shame.

Nesta flees the apartment without trying to repair the damage. Meanwhile, Cassian retraces her path from the House, realizes she descended all ten thousand steps, and searches for her through Velaris. He first guesses she has gone to the river house, but before he can reach her, Feyre speaks mind-to-mind with Rhys and reports what happened. Rhys, outwardly calm but murderous with fury, orders Cassian to get Nesta out of the city at once before Rhys kills her himself.
