Chapter Seventy-Eight
Overview
The chapter shifts from survival to renewal as Nesta reunites with Gwyn and Emerie, celebrates their victory in the Blood Rite, and finally feels ready to welcome the future. It then confirms the birth of Nyx and reveals the cost of Nesta's sacrifice: she surrendered most of her power to save Feyre, Rhys, and the baby, though some magic remains.
In the chapter's most important personal turn, Nesta tells Cassian she also changed her own body for a possible future family, and the two openly affirm their love and mating bond. Their happiness is real, but it sits beside unresolved threats involving the Dread Trove, Koschei, the queens, and coming war.
Summary
Nesta finds Gwyn and Emerie waiting in a parlor, fully healed by the magic stone that carried them out of the Blood Rite and brought them to the House of Wind. The three friends embrace, celebrate Gwyn and Emerie's shared victory, and joke about the outrage their triumph will cause among the Illyrians. Emerie also confirms that Bellius's death can be explained as a normal Rite casualty, helping contain the truth about what really happened on Ramiel.
As they talk, Nesta realizes the future no longer feels unbearable. With Gwyn and Emerie beside her and Cassian waiting for her, Nesta finally feels eager to see what comes next. That sense of hope marks a major emotional shift after everything she has endured and sacrificed.
Later, Cassian visits Feyre and Rhys with their newborn son, Nyx, who has dark hair, blue eyes, and delicate wings. Nesta enters after having already held the baby, then quietly asks Cassian to follow her outside. On the lawn by the river, Cassian asks whether Nesta's immense power is truly gone, and Nesta explains that she gave it back to the Cauldron in exchange for the knowledge needed to save Feyre, Rhys, and Nyx. Nesta believes that some other force, likely the Mother, prevented the Cauldron from taking everything.
Nesta then reveals that she also altered her own body so that she will not face Feyre's deadly risk if she ever has a child. Cassian is moved both by the sacrifice Nesta made and by her openness about a possible shared future. When Cassian says Nesta could have ruled the world with her former power, Nesta answers that she wants only him. The two joke about whether to mark their bond with a lavish mating ceremony or a biscuit, but beneath the humor they confirm their love and commitment. Even with the Dread Trove, Koschei, the mortal queens, and looming war still unresolved, Nesta and Cassian choose to leave those burdens for later and stand together in the warmth of their new beginning.
