A month passes as winter settles over Velaris, and Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie keep training as Valkyries despite the cold. Nesta notices that her body is stronger and healthier now, even though she still feels emotionally uncertain about Cassian and worries that his desire for her will eventually fade. At the same time, Nesta continues private dance lessons with Mor using the Veritas orb, learning court dances she will need for the coming ball with Eris.

After one lesson, Mor asks what Nesta plans to wear and insists Nesta will need something suited to Eris's love of appearances. Their conversation becomes unexpectedly warm, and Nesta thanks her, calling her "Mor" for the first time. At the library, Mor reunites affectionately with Clotho while Nesta meets Gwyn and Emerie. Emerie, unsettled by the lower levels, admits that the darkness seems to make her hear her abusive father's rage, revealing how deeply her past still haunts her.

Gwyn then gives Nesta and Emerie Solstice presents: pages from Merrill's work describing the rebirth of the Valkyries and naming the three of them as part of that history. Nesta is deeply moved to see their efforts recorded and valued, and Gwyn tells them that their stories are worth telling. The gift confirms that what they are building together matters beyond their private training.

That evening, Cassian sends word that he must stay overnight at an Illyrian outpost because tensions between war-bands are worsening as the Blood Rite approaches. Alone in her room and still thinking about Gwyn's gift and Emerie's fear, Nesta asks the House for a small fire. Instead of fleeing from the crackling flames that remind her of her father's death and her own trauma, Nesta deliberately stays, using breath and self-command to endure the fear until the fire burns out. The moment feels small from the outside, but for Nesta it is a real victory over the past.

Afterward, the House guides her with a trail of evergreen into the deepest levels of the library, down to the pit at its heart. There Nesta realizes that the library's darkness is the House's own hidden, wounded center, and that it has been trying to show her that it is like the priestesses, Emerie, and Nesta herself: fractured, haunted, and still worthy of love. Nesta blows out her lantern, stands willingly in the dark, and accepts the House as both friend and home.
