Chapter Eighty
Overview
As Nesta and Cassian prepare for their mating ceremony, Nesta reflects on how completely her life has changed: she has a home, a family, and a future she no longer fears. The chapter culminates in Nesta visiting her father’s grave with Feyre and Elain, where she lets go of the need to beg forgiveness and instead offers gratitude. That act marks a final emotional step in her healing, confirming that she now chooses love, belonging, and hope.
Summary
In spring, Velaris settles into a gentler rhythm as Feyre and Nyx recover enough to take daily walks. Nesta reflects on her new life with Cassian, including his constant use of the word mate, their continued training with the priestesses despite surviving the Blood Rite, and the fact that she, Gwyn, and Emerie still intend to become true Valkyries. Nesta also looks ahead to her mating ceremony with Cassian in three days, which will be held at the river house temple and made lavish by Rhys.
Nesta thinks about what has changed around her emotionally as well as practically. Rhys has given the House of Wind to Nesta and Cassian, while preserving the library for the priestesses and the House’s official uses. Feyre has also given Nesta a portrait of her standing at the Pass of Enalius, placing Nesta beside portraits of Feyre and Elain. These gifts make Nesta realize that the House, Velaris, and the Night Court have become her true home.
The chapter’s main action begins when Nesta joins Feyre and Elain on a walk outside the city to visit their father’s grave. Feyre first kneels at the gravestone and introduces baby Nyx to his grandfather, then Elain speaks privately as well. Afterward, both sisters step back and leave Nesta alone with the grave, honoring Feyre’s earlier invitation for Nesta to come if she wished.
Standing alone, Nesta searches for an apology or explanation but finds that neither is necessary anymore. She understands that her father died loving her, and she resolves to live in a way that earns that love and the love of the people still around her, especially Cassian. She places a small carved rose on the gravestone, thanks her father, and finally reaches a place of gratitude and peace.
As Cassian circles overhead to guard them, Nesta senses his presence and blows him a kiss. Feeling the love she now carries rather than the emptiness that once defined her, she rejoins Feyre and Elain, who wait for her with Nyx asleep in Elain’s arms. Nesta hurries down the hill smiling, fully stepping into her family, her future, and the home she has accepted.
