Chapter Fifty-Seven
Overview
At the Solstice ball in the Court of Nightmares, Feyre’s pregnancy is publicly revealed, and the Night Court uses the celebration to strengthen its political position with Eris. Nesta’s dazzling dances with Eris and then Cassian mark a major shift in how she is seen: not as a liability, but as a formidable, magnetic force. The chapter raises the stakes when Eris becomes openly interested in marrying Nesta, turning her into both a strategic asset and a source of deeper conflict.
Summary
At the Winter Solstice ball in the Court of Nightmares, Cassian dreads the night because Nesta is about to dance with Eris as part of the Night Court’s political strategy. Rhysand and Feyre arrive in state, and Feyre’s visible pregnancy shocks the assembled court, publicly announcing the child at last. Elain and Nesta follow behind them in black, emphasizing that both sisters stand with the Night Court and that Nesta is a person of power and value.
Before the dancing begins, Rhysand presents Eris with the dagger Nesta Made, though Rhysand lies and calls it a family heirloom to protect the truth about Nesta’s abilities. Eris senses the dagger’s unusual power and accepts it cautiously. Feyre then names Nesta as her replacement on the dance floor, sending Nesta to dance with Eris in full view of the court.
Once the music starts, Nesta astonishes everyone. From her own perspective, the music consumes her, and she dances with total control, joy, and precision, while also using the performance to captivate Eris as planned. Cassian watches as Nesta’s skill, confidence, and wild delight transform her in front of the entire room, making him realize how commanding and dangerous she might appear to other courts if they understood her full power.
During later dances, Nesta and Eris speak more directly. Eris hints that Mor has hidden the truth about what happened between them and claims others believe an easier version of events. He flatters Nesta, suggests she is wasted in the Night Court, and grows visibly interested in her. When Eris insults Cassian and tries to keep Nesta to himself, Cassian cuts in, and Nesta reluctantly changes partners to preserve the larger political game.
Nesta then dances with Cassian, and the moment shifts from strategy to intimacy. Cassian is nervous rather than polished, but he follows Nesta into the music, and their connection overwhelms everything else; Nesta finally smiles openly at him. Later, while Nesta dances with Azriel, Rhysand lets Cassian and Mor overhear his conversation with Eris, who bluntly offers almost anything in exchange for marrying Nesta. Rhysand refuses to decide for her but agrees to consider it, leaving Cassian furious and underscoring that Nesta has become both a political prize and a personal fault line.
