Chapter Twenty-One
Overview
Elain’s offer to search for the Dread Trove sparks a bitter confrontation that exposes Nesta’s fear, possessiveness, and habit of making Elain’s suffering about herself. The conflict shifts when Feyre reveals she is pregnant and therefore cannot safely use her powers to help, forcing Nesta to accept the task of scrying instead. By the end of the chapter, Nesta has both deepened the wound with Elain and received an unexpected, intimate olive branch from Feyre.
Summary
Elain’s offer to help find the Dread Trove shocks the room, and Nesta immediately forbids it. Amren argues that either Elain or Nesta might be able to track the Trove because both were Made and may be immune to its power, but Nesta refuses to let Elain risk herself. The argument escalates when Elain insists that Nesta cannot both dismiss her quiet life and deny her any larger role.
Nesta’s fear for Elain turns vicious. She throws cruel words at both sisters, and when Elain pushes back, she accuses Nesta of centering Elain’s trauma around herself rather than acknowledging what Elain suffered. Elain leaves after telling them to come to her when they are ready to begin, and Nesta is left facing the damage she has done.
When Nesta presses Feyre to be the one to search instead, Feyre reveals why she cannot: she is pregnant. The revelation transforms the tense gathering into celebration as Cassian, Azriel, Amren, and Rhys react with joy. Nesta stands apart from their closeness, but she quietly congratulates Feyre, and Rhys makes it clear through a silent exchange that he will protect Feyre and the baby from any threat.
Feyre explains that her pregnancy limits how safely she can use her powers, especially this early, so the burden of searching still remains. Rhys stresses that Nesta has a choice, but also that time is running out. Knowing Elain will otherwise be drawn in, Nesta agrees to scry for the Trove herself.
Afterward, Feyre catches Nesta alone in the foyer and waits with her for Cassian. In a private gesture of trust, Feyre tells Nesta before anyone else that the baby is a boy and explains that the Bone Carver once showed her the child she would have with Rhys. Feyre also gently affirms that Elain was right about how the sisters have mishandled Elain’s trauma, then offers Nesta a small but sincere act of sisterly connection before returning to the others.
