Chapter Fifteen
Overview
Nesta’s encounter with the library’s lower darkness suggests that something old and dangerous may recognize her Cauldron-made nature, adding a new supernatural threat to her arc. At the same time, Cassian reveals the trauma behind his devotion to training and the terrifying beings he has helped imprison, which reshapes how Nesta sees him. Their growing honesty quickly turns into unmistakable sexual tension, marking a major shift in their relationship from hostility and restraint toward open desire.
Summary
While shelving books in the library, Nesta is drawn to the unnerving darkness near the lower levels and feels it pulse, breathe, and call her name. Gwyn finds her staring into it and, taking the threat seriously, quickly leads her away while using an Invoking Stone for protection. Once they are safe, Gwyn explains that some priestesses believe something of Bryaxis may have lingered in the darkness, but Nesta says it felt older and realizes the force may have reacted to her because she was Made by the Cauldron. Their conversation deepens into mutual trust as Nesta admits part of the Cauldron remains in her, and Gwyn warns her to stay away from that level.
The next morning, Nesta complains that Cassian is still making her do balance and stretching work instead of real combat training. Cassian explains that her poor stance and favoring of her right side would get her injured if they advanced too quickly, then unexpectedly tells her about his mother: she was shunned for bearing him, abused, and died after he was taken from her. Because of that pain, Cassian says training became the one constant that grounded him through humiliation, war, and loss, and he urges Nesta to see that it can do the same for her. Moved by his honesty and recognizing the defensiveness he expects from her, Nesta chooses to continue rather than retreat.
That evening, the House of Wind amuses Nesta with a stack of explicit romance novels and gently pushes her to attend dinner anyway. Over the meal, Nesta tells Cassian about the darkness in the library and Gwyn’s intervention. Cassian reacts with visible fear, admits Bryaxis embodied his deepest nightmares, and then describes some of the ancient, near-primordial monsters he helped imprison, including Lanthys, Lubia, and Blue Annis. These stories reveal that Cassian is far more than a brute and also connect to his concern that Nesta’s own power should not remain unexamined or unused.
The conversation then shifts into confrontation when Cassian presses Nesta about her powers and her break with Amren. Nesta evades him, but Cassian deliberately provokes her until her silver fire rises, then openly admires her instead of recoiling. Their argument turns into a charged physical standoff: Nesta presses Cassian against the wall, and Cassian tells her he has wanted her since she was human, stopping just short of touching her without permission. He then walks away after promising he will think about her expression, leaving Nesta shaken, aroused, and unable to sleep; later, alone in her room, she gives in to that desire and imagines Cassian while bringing herself to release.
