Chapter Sixty
Overview
Cassian returns to find that Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie have become a true sisterhood, and their ribbon-cutting ritual formally marks them as Valkyries. He and Azriel then force the priestesses into team-based military training, pushing them to function as a disciplined unit rather than as individuals. When Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie finally conquer the obstacle course, Azriel reveals it was a Blood Rite Qualifier staged for Illyrian observers, making their strength impossible for Devlon and the other traditionalists to dismiss.
Summary
After five days away inspecting the Illyrian legions, Cassian returns to find a visible change in the bond between Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie. In the training ring, Gwyn faces the ribbon test while Nesta and Emerie encourage her, and Gwyn cuts it cleanly after repeating a mantra of resilience. Nesta ties the severed ribbon around Gwyn’s brow and names her a Valkyrie, creating a new ritual that the others soon complete as well, with Emerie second and Nesta third.
Although becoming Valkyries gives Nesta a new focus, it does not lessen her intense desire for Cassian after Solstice. Cassian keeps his distance, and the next morning Nesta learns he has redirected that tension into training. Cassian and Azriel unveil a new obstacle course and explain that true Valkyrie strength comes from working as a unit, not only as individual fighters, so the priestesses must complete the course in groups of three.
Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie push themselves harder than anyone else, but the course repeatedly defeats them. Cassian and Azriel change it each night, forcing the females to adapt to new combinations of agility drills, mental puzzles, and strength challenges. The priestesses also begin broader military training together, learning formation marching, shield work, and coordinated combat, while more of them cut the ribbon and join the Valkyries. At the same time, Nesta keeps running the House stairs each night, driven now by discipline and purpose rather than pain.
Two months after the obstacle course is introduced, Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie finally complete it. The other priestesses are absent for a ceremony arranged by Clotho, and only Cassian, Azriel, and two hidden male observers witness the victory. When Gwyn asks for the promised prize, Azriel reveals that they have just passed the Blood Rite Qualifier, and Nesta realizes the observer above is Lord Devlon, who has been brought to see their skill with his own eyes.
Cassian and Azriel explain that they staged the test so the Illyrians would be forced to acknowledge that these females are as well trained as any warrior unit, even if the title of Valkyrie means nothing to them. Emerie is shaken by the reminder of the Blood Rite’s brutality, and Cassian makes clear that none of them must enter it unless they choose to. Nesta rejects the need for Illyrian approval by saying she would rather be a Valkyrie, and the others agree, ending the chapter with their identity and unity strengthened on their own terms.
