Chapter 31

Overview

After predicting that the Krakaren will burst through the stairwell stations when the clock hits one day remaining, Carl evacuates those areas and rigs station 36 with a suspended interdiction cart aimed into the Abyss. The trap successfully turns the station’s central rupture into a chute for the invading Krakaren, but monsters still flood through side routes and other crawler groups suffer severe losses or become trapped. Fire Brandy’s news that Madison was lynched and the later soul-crystal explosions show the floor is unraveling on every level, pushing Carl toward yet another risky idea.

Summary

After Katia’s discovery about the mirrored stations, Carl acts on his suspicion that the Krakaren will erupt through the stairwell hubs. He broadcasts a warning for everyone to abandon stairwell stations, persuades Bautista to pull back from crowded station 72, and watches other groups choose safer platforms or tracks. While Elle, Katia, and Donut test the growing Krakaren juveniles near station 24 and learn that fire, center-mass bolts, and some psychic effects work best, Carl spends hours hauling an interdiction cart toward station 36, intending to use its portal against the coming flood.

At station 36, Carl’s plan nearly fails because the cart cannot fit through the twisting corridors into the main chamber. Zhang arrives in time with a one-use shrinking wand, allowing the crawlers to push the still-heavy but tiny cart through the hallways before it returns to full size in the room’s center. Carl and the others then build a crane above the circle of stairwells with metal supports and Imani’s magical chains, hoist the cart vertically over the center opening, and aim its portal downward toward the Abyss.

When the floor timer reaches one day remaining, a system message announces that the Iron Tangle has broken down, that the Krakaren have betrayed management, and that emergency tunnels and stairwell portals are opening. Across the floor, the centers of stations collapse and full-sized Krakaren pour upward into the rooms, confirming Carl’s theory and causing panic in chat. At station 36, however, Carl’s trap works: when the group returns, they find thousands of Krakaren dropping straight into the hanging portal and being redirected into the Abyss instead of flooding the chamber.

Imani orders a perimeter around the portal because the success is only partial. Juvenile Krakaren start entering through normal rail approaches, proving the creatures are also spreading through side passages, so Katia, Donut, Mongo, and the flamethrower teams reset to defend the chokepoints. During this tense hold, Carl reflects on an earlier visit to the Nightmare, where Fire Brandy gave him more sheol rocks and revealed that dwarves and gremlins had hanged Madison after learning the truth about their world, leaving Brandy shaken and increasingly aware that the entire floor is a manufactured lie.

An hour later, the flow from below slows to nothing, but the outside pressure worsens. Krakaren and blister ghouls assault the chamber from multiple entrances, and the defenders learn to use fire and ice to manage the creatures and their dangerous acid blood. Messages from Bautista and other groups show that the wider floor is collapsing into chaos: some survivors are trapped between monster swarms and mantaur bosses, others cannot retake stations they abandoned, and new province bosses are appearing in places where they were not before.

When a stronger wave of level 20 to 23 Krakaren breaks one defense line, Katia smashes into the packed monsters with Crowd Blast, Carl throws boom jugs into both side corridors, and Donut spends her last Puddle Jump to pull the team back after the attack. Imani immediately heals the acid damage, and the defenders recover the chokepoint. Soon after, nearby explosions shake the area, and Mordecai confirms Carl’s suspicion that overloaded soul crystals are blowing like fuses. Instead of being deterred, Carl seizes on the idea and begins considering another dangerous plan.

Who Appears

  • Carl
Organizes the evacuation, builds the portal trap at station 36, defends the chamber, and conceives another dangerous plan.
  • Katia

  • Donut
Fights Krakaren, helps defend chokepoints, argues with a dog soldier, and spends her last Puddle Jump.
  • Imani
Provides magical chains for the crane, directs defenses, and heals acid damage during the breach.
  • Elle
Leads testing against Krakaren, freezes acid pools during the siege, and investigates the later explosions.
  • Fire Brandy
Gives Carl sheol rocks and reveals that Madison was hanged by dwarves and gremlins.
  • Zhang
Earth Mover who saves Carl’s plan with a one-charge shrinking wand for the interdiction cart.
  • Bautista
Retreats from station 72 and later reports his group trapped between monsters and mantaur bosses.
  • Mordecai
Previously inspired Carl’s reading of the floor and now confirms that overloaded soul crystals are exploding.
