Chapter 12

Overview

At Station 149, Carl’s team gains new sponsors, loots a full Ochre line map, and learns that disrupting the trains is destabilizing the floor because the monsters are being controlled through addictive drug distribution. Katia also reveals a lasting injury, sharpening Carl’s concern that the group is underprepared for the dangers ahead.

Following Katia’s transit plan, the group boards the Dismemberment Limited and discovers why the named trains are so deadly: Levi the Seventh is bait for Fleshers and the war mage Dismember. Forced into an improvised defense, Carl and Donut use Donut’s Hole spell to decapitate Dismember, proving the spell can become a major tactical weapon.

Summary

After the fight at Station 149, Donut excitedly announces that she has reached level 28 and gained Princess D’nadia of the Prism Kingdom as a sponsor, while Carl reveals that the Valtay Corporation has sponsored him. Carl worries this ties him more directly to the larger Borant-Valtay conflict and may make him a target. When Carl loots Gore-Gore’s corpse, he gains an engineer’s key, hair-restoration potion, and a neighborhood map that unexpectedly reveals the entire Ochre line, every station, all train positions, and nearby monsters.

The map shows monsters leaving stations and walking the tracks because the derailed trains have disrupted the system. Carl realizes the distances between stations vary wildly, making some stretches walkable and others enormous. Upstairs, Katia reveals that Gore-Gore severed part of her hand while she protected Carl; although her shapeshifting body heals, she cannot fully restore what was lost, which deepens her fear that she is slowly losing pieces of herself. Carl comforts Katia, resolves that she needs far more armor to function as a true tank, and the group retreats briefly to a saferoom restaurant to recover.

While eating, Katia studies the transit map and proposes a faster route to the end of the line by transferring onto named trains, including the Dismemberment Limited and then the Nightmare Express. Donut reports that the boss loot mostly contained healing scrolls and a poison dart trap kit, and Carl agrees to follow Katia’s plan despite not fully understanding the map. Before the train arrives, Carl messages Elle and Imani, who explain what they learned at another station: every fifth stop serves as a distribution point where monsters receive race-specific addictive potion doses from Pookas through one-way portals. Because the monsters depend on these drugs, stopping trains traps them away from their doses and causes dangerous changes, explaining why the whole floor destabilizes when crawlers interfere.

Carl theorizes that the drug system exists because the dungeon needs monsters to behave in predictable patterns despite being real, semi-independent beings. Soon the Dismemberment Limited arrives, and the group boards despite the engineer Levi the Seventh begging them not to. Levi is a weak symbiote made from troll flesh and a hobgoblin skeleton, and his presence triggers a quest: Carl’s group must prevent Levi from being devoured, or every crawler on the train will be turned into a Flesher. Inside, the first car is drenched in old blood, and Carl quickly realizes that previous riders likely died on these named trains.

Carl and Katia jam a heavy metal plate against the rear door as Fleshers and a war mage named Dismember attack from the next car. Donut and Mongo tear at the pieces of flesh squeezing around the barrier while Levi panics and reveals that Dismember repeatedly hunts him for stronger iterations. As the pressure builds and Dismember taunts them, Carl chooses an untested tactic: Donut opens a small Hole in the metal plate, Carl grabs Dismember by the hair through the opening, and Donut instantly closes the spell. The move cleanly severs Dismember’s head, abruptly turning the standoff in Carl’s favor.
