Chapter 23
Overview
The uneasy alliance with Hekla collapses when Carl and Donut confront her over Katia’s sudden injury, and Eva admits Katia was deliberately attacked to provoke Carl. Eva’s contemptuous mockery destroys any chance of reconciliation and pushes Katia past her limit. When Katia lashes out with Rush, she accidentally kills Hekla, eliminating the number-two crawler and dramatically shifting both Katia’s trajectory and the floor’s power balance.
Summary
After Hekla is knocked back in the cramped train cab, Eva immediately attacks Carl and Donut while two other daughters rush in casting spells. Carl drops the unconscious Katia, blocks Eva’s strike with his gauntlet, and throws up Wisp Armor as magic hits him. Silfa heals Hekla, and Hekla quickly orders everyone to stop fighting and sends the other crawlers out of the cab, even as defenders are dying outside and the train escape is running out of time.
With only Carl, Donut, Katia, Hekla, and Eva left inside, Hekla admits she made a mistake and asks for a pause so the group can still work together long enough to escape. Donut refuses, furiously accusing Hekla of betraying Katia after pretending to care about her. Katia wakes confused and in pain, and Carl tries to calm the situation long enough to learn why Hekla attacked her.
Hekla keeps minimizing the attack and suggests the groups simply separate, but Carl presses for an explanation. Katia first assumes Donut hit her by accident during the fight with the ghouls, but Eva bluntly reveals the truth: Hekla and Eva targeted Katia on purpose to provoke Carl’s famous temper, not because Katia had done anything wrong. Eva then turns cruel, mocking Katia’s insecurities, past abandonment, and confusion until the emotional damage becomes worse than the physical attack.
Shattered by Eva’s taunts, Katia finally snaps and activates Rush, a skill she hates because it is powerful but wildly unreliable. Katia aims for Eva, but the charge veers off-center, and Katia misses Eva by inches. Instead, Katia slams Hekla into the train wall and kills her, becoming the first crawler this season to kill a top-ten player; Katia earns a 500,000-gold bounty, and Carl notices Katia has jumped from level 24 to level 37, marked by a golden skull.
