Chapter 2

Overview

At transfer station 83, Carl’s party reaches temporary safety and begins to understand how the Iron Tangle is structured, including the scarcity of stairwells and the importance of transfer stations. In the saferoom they learn how badly crawler numbers have collapsed, open a haul of loot shaped by the court’s overturned quest, and discover the AI has compensated them with unusually valuable personal-space coupons.

Those rewards let Carl, Donut, and Katia combine three level-three personal spaces into a shared level-five home with powerful upgrades, giving the party a major long-term advantage in rest, crafting, and training. The chapter also strengthens each member’s build through new skills, gear, and spells, setting them up for the fourth floor’s harsher close-quarters fights.

Summary

Carl, Princess Donut, Katia, and Mongo get off the train at transfer station 83 and confirm that the platform itself is safe, even with the monster-filled train pulling away. Carl studies the tracks, warns Mongo away from the exposed third rail, and uses Escape Plan on a station sign to reveal more of the Red Line map. The map shows one-way travel, marked transfer stations, recurring red-square stations, and a note that saferooms appear at transfer stations while stairwells only appear at certain numbered stations, making the floor’s layout seem even more complicated.

The party goes upstairs into the station hub, where Carl finds a saferoom, a weapons guild, and Limp Richard’s sundries shop. Inside the saferoom, they discover it has reverted to a restaurant format and reunite with Mordecai, who has been transformed into a Grulke. Mordecai already knows the court overturned their earlier quest result, and Carl checks the screens to learn that crawler numbers have fallen to 389,441, far worse than expected for this stage. Mordecai explains that the AI will likely compensate for the unusually harsh floor by pushing better rewards and gear, but he warns them not to depend on luck-based advancement.

The group then opens loot while Donut practices negotiating with Wendita over the cost of a personal saferoom. Carl reviews several new achievements, including a spiteful AI-generated reward tied to the overturned quest, and Mordecai explains that the AI is acting out after being overruled. Carl’s ordinary boxes mostly contain consumables and saleable junk, but his better prizes include Confusing Fog and Heal scrolls, a spell tome called Bang Bro, and the Enchanted Necklace of the Haute Bourgeoisie, which confirms his ownership of the Skyfowl settlement, boosts his Dexterity, grants Talon Strike, and promises future tax income if he still holds the town at floor’s end.

The AI compensation box proves especially valuable: it contains a free level-three personal space coupon plus upgrade coupons. Mordecai realizes this is a major advantage because it saves the team enormous costs and leaves future sponsors free to provide other help. Donut eventually stops haggling when Carl tells her not to push Wendita into paying personally, then opens her own loot and gains the same coupons, a new tiara that boosts Intelligence and map detection, and a spell called Hole. Katia receives a shield bracer that works well with her shapeshifting race, prompting Carl and Mordecai to recognize how powerful heavy armor could become for her build. Carl spends his stat points mainly on Strength, Constitution, and Intelligence, while Mordecai notes that Donut is nearing 100 Charisma, a threshold that will significantly change her capabilities.

Finally, Mordecai directs the team to redeem their coupons immediately. Donut, Carl, and Katia each claim a level-three personal space and pay to conjoin them into a shared level-five home, with the understanding that Katia’s part can separate later if she rejoins Hekla. Guided by Mordecai, they use their coupons on an ultra-restorative bed, an automatic shower, an enhanced crafting studio, and a training room, while saving one coupon for future store access. After paying the joining costs, they unlock a new interface tab, earn a homeowner achievement, and watch the blank doorway open into their newly conjoined personal space, which Donut eagerly rushes to inspect and rename.
