Chapter 24

Overview

In the aftermath of Hekla’s death, Carl and his group barely hold the engine car, then reverse a train full of crawlers away from Station 101 as stage-three monsters overrun the platform. Carl persuades Silfa that Hekla and Eva had manipulated events to sacrifice Katia and possibly Silfa in order to seize Donut and strengthen their party, exposing the full betrayal behind the attack. Katia claims Hekla’s powerful crossbow, and Carl turns from survival to strategy by sending Li Jun to help move survivors toward a defense at Station 36 while he continues the rescue mission.

Summary

Hekla’s death throws the engine car into chaos. Eva and Brynhild’s Daughters rush in, but Donut uses Second Chance on Hekla’s corpse and then duplicates the minion with Clockwork Triplicate, creating multiple Heklas that shock and scatter the attackers. During the confusion, Eva is thrown out the window, and Carl orders Katia to loot Hekla for the Vermillion key and crossbow. Before they can fully secure the corpse, stage-three monsters swarm the platform, forcing Carl to abandon his original plan.

Because the train is suddenly packed with crawlers and immediate escape matters more than retreat, Carl decides to keep control of the front engine and drive the whole train backward from Station 101. Katia gets the key, the engine door is sealed, and Carl reverses the train just as tentacled monsters begin slamming into the cars. Once they are moving away from the station, Carl, Katia, and Donut absorb what happened: Hekla is dead, Katia has jumped to level 37, and all three of them have gained levels from the fight.

As the danger briefly eases, Katia begins to crack under the shock of killing Hekla, and the three of them laugh helplessly at the absurdity of the blood-soaked room. The moment ends when Donut detects someone hiding in the mantaur apartment. Silfa, the fairy healer, tries to flee, but Carl stops her and insists on talking instead of fighting.

Carl explains his theory that Hekla engineered the situation on purpose: Katia was meant to die, Silfa was being kept nearby as bait, and Carl was expected to attack in anger. That would have justified killing Carl and left Donut isolated and easier to absorb into Brynhild’s Daughters. Silfa resists at first, but Eva’s orders, the hidden crossbow bolt, and the placement of Silfa’s daughters as guards convince her that Hekla had indeed planned sacrifices for the party’s advantage. Silfa leaves devastated, and Carl recognizes that Hekla’s death has destroyed Brynhild’s Daughters as a stable faction.

Afterward, Katia reveals that she successfully looted Hekla’s unique repeating crossbow, a female-only weapon that grows stronger with more women in the party. Later, Li Jun reaches the engine car and thanks Carl for saving more crawlers. Carl shows Li Jun how to run the train and orders him to detach the car at Station 75, then move survivors toward a defensive stand at Station 36, where Imani is holding against the ghouls. Carl, Donut, and Katia plan to continue on and rescue the trapped allies still farther down the line.
