Chapter 13
Overview
On the roof, Misery confronts Lowe about his plan to meet Emery alone and pushes to join the mission, turning a tactical argument into an unusually intimate conversation. As they trade confessions about Serena, Ana, Roscoe, and the nature of Were mates, their trust deepens and Misery finally articulates that she wants to help because she has begun to care. The chapter ends with a major shift in their alliance: Lowe agrees to take Misery with him only if she allows herself to be marked.
Summary
Unable to sleep, Misery climbs onto the roof for solitude and finds Lowe there doing the same. After teasing him about his poor tech skills, Misery correctly guesses that Lowe plans to use his meeting with Emery to plant surveillance and gather proof that Emery is behind the Loyal unrest. Misery offers to handle the technical side and insists on coming, but Lowe refuses because he sees the trip as too dangerous and does not want to risk her safety.
The conversation shifts into a quieter exchange about Lowe himself. Lowe admits that he barely sleeps, and Misery learns more about how suddenly he was forced into parenthood with Ana. Lowe jokes about his mistakes, but his self-blame makes clear that he feels unprepared and guilty despite how devoted he is. Misery also asks about his past in Zurich, where Lowe studied and worked in a more openly mixed city of Weres, Humans, and some Vampyres, and Lowe explains that he had built a life there until Roscoe's escalating violence and a phone call about Lowe's wounded mother and defenseless sister forced him home for good.
As Misery keeps asking questions, Lowe explains more of the pack's structure. He clarifies that the pack is not ruled like a strict military, that trusted seconds are chosen through family-based groups, and that most of those leaders are new after Roscoe's fall. Lowe also speaks about Mick and Mick's family losses, giving Misery a better sense of the grief and instability that still shape the pack. Their joking grows more intimate when Lowe notices that Misery hides her fangs when she laughs, and he presses her to show him. Misery reluctantly smiles with her fangs exposed, and Lowe studies them without disgust, which gives Misery an unexpected sense of relief.
That acceptance leads Misery to reveal something much more painful: before Serena disappeared, the two of them had their worst fight. Misery admits that Serena accused her of drifting through life without caring about anything except Serena, and that those words still torment her because Serena vanished before they could make peace. Wanting to keep the emotional balance between them, Misery then asks Lowe to explain what a Were mate is. Lowe describes it as a rare, deeply biological bond recognized through scent, touch, and powerful internal changes, not just ordinary romantic attraction. He also admits that the bond is not always reciprocal, and his comments suggest a personal understanding of that pain.
By the end of the conversation, Misery connects Lowe's devotion to his pack and Ana with her own determination to find Serena. She tells Lowe that Serena taught her how to care, and that helping Lowe stop whoever is threatening Ana is the first thing that has made her feel purposeful in a long time. Moved by her honesty and impressed by her resolve, Lowe finally relents and says that Misery can come with him to Emery's if she agrees to do it on his terms. His condition is stark and significant: if Misery goes with him, she will have to be marked.
