Chapter 22
Overview
Alex uncovers a major lead in Serena’s disappearance: Serena met with Thomas Jalakas, a former Human-Were Bureau official who is likely Ana’s father and who died shortly after Serena vanished. Because Governor Davenport appointed Thomas to both of his key posts, Lowe secures a dinner invitation that could move the investigation forward.
At the same time, Misery and Lowe cross another emotional threshold. Misery agrees to feed from Lowe again despite knowing the bond it can create, and their intimacy deepens as Lowe reveals both the seriousness of his feelings and the physical limits of their species mismatch.
Summary
Misery wakes close to midnight, weak and painfully hungry after going a week without feeding. She goes downstairs and finds Lowe and Alex working late in the kitchen. Alex awkwardly thanks Misery for saving Ana, and Misery panics about Serena’s cat, Sparkles, only to learn Ana has been caring for him.
Alex then reveals he kept digging into Serena’s past contacts and found a hidden connection: Thomas Jalakas, a public finance official Serena once interviewed, also secretly worked for the Human-Were Bureau years earlier. Misery immediately connects the name to Ana and realizes Thomas is almost certainly Ana’s father because Ana strongly resembles him. The lead turns grim when Lowe tells Misery that Thomas died in a car accident two weeks after Serena disappeared, suggesting Serena got involved in something dangerous and that Thomas may have been silenced.
Misery wants to question anyone connected to Thomas, but Lowe points her toward a more powerful source: Governor Davenport, who appointed Thomas to both of his major positions. Lowe has already arranged a dinner invitation for the next evening. The plan gives Misery her first meaningful lead on Serena in a long time, but it also raises the danger, and Lowe explicitly asks Misery to be careful in what he sees as enemy territory.
When Misery reaches for stored blood, Lowe stops her and offers himself instead. Misery hesitates because Owen warned her that repeated direct feeding creates a deeper bond than casual sex, tying lives and emotions together. Lowe does not back away; he insists that whatever consequences exist, they are already living them. Misery accepts, feeds from his wrist, and the exchange intensifies their physical and emotional connection.
Upstairs, their intimacy deepens further. Lowe admits he has been obsessed with her scent and fantasies about her, and Misery learns that some of his possessive instincts are bound up with being a Were Alpha. When Misery asks about intercourse and contraception, Lowe explains that they are not fully compatible for penetrative sex, not because she is a Vampyre, but because of how strongly her scent and presence affect his body. He later shows her the swelling at the base of his cock, making clear why he believes intercourse would hurt her.
Even with that limit, they continue exploring each other through feeding, touching, and mutual pleasure. Lowe praises Misery openly, tells her he found her beautiful from the start, and guides them into a form of sex that satisfies them both. By the end of the chapter, Misery has both a crucial investigative lead through Governor Davenport and a much deeper, harder-to-deny bond with Lowe.
