Chapter 23
Overview
What begins as a light, intimate errand for a dinner gift becomes a major breakthrough in Serena’s case. At Governor Davenport’s house, Lowe corners the governor into confessing that Thomas Jalakas was murdered for exposing embezzlement, linking Serena’s disappearance to a far more dangerous political cover-up. On the way to a secret meeting with Owen, Lowe raises the possibility that Serena vanished by choice, and the chapter ends with a destabilizing revelation when Owen arrives with a woman who smells like Were: Lowe’s mate.
Summary
Before visiting Governor Davenport, Misery and Lowe go into Human territory to buy a host gift. Their trip turns into playful bickering through antique stores until they agree on an expensive, hideous polar-bear ashtray because neither of them actually likes the governor. On the drive, Misery asks how Were finances work, and Lowe explains that most Weres have jobs and that pack leadership is supported by organized investments rather than hereditary wealth. The outing feels unexpectedly intimate to Misery, especially when Lowe quietly takes care of her and makes the pack territory feel dangerously close to home.
At the governor’s house, Davenport acts smug, nosy, and faintly vulgar about their marriage, while Lowe and Misery present a united front. When Davenport brings up old Were-Vampyre tensions, Misery and Lowe briefly compare what each side was taught about the massacre tied to the previous arranged marriage, revealing how differently their peoples remember the same history. Over dinner, Davenport boasts about his long-standing private meetings with Misery’s father and hints at his own political future, while Lowe calmly steers the conversation toward his mother’s past work and Thomas Jalakas.
Lowe asks whether Davenport knew Thomas Jalakas, and Davenport claims Thomas died in a car accident. When Davenport then insults Thomas’s character, Lowe decides he is lying. Lowe slams Davenport against a wall and, even with armed Human agents aiming at him, forces a confession: Davenport had Thomas killed because Thomas was speaking to journalists about embezzlement in the governor’s administration. After getting the truth, Lowe releases him and leaves with Misery, having already arranged surveillance in case Davenport makes another move.
In the car, Misery tries to fit this new information into Serena’s disappearance and Ana’s name appearing in Serena’s planner. Lowe suggests a painful alternative theory: Serena may have learned about Ana first, used that knowledge to pressure Thomas into sharing information, and then chosen to vanish once she realized Davenport might target her. Misery resists the idea because it would mean Serena left deliberately without telling her, though Lowe points out that Serena may have expected Misery to follow clues such as the cat she left behind.
Still shaken, Misery travels with Lowe toward the Vampyre-Human border to meet Owen in secret. The trip stirs old memories of being sent away as a child, and Lowe gently offers to turn back if she cannot face it. When they arrive at the secluded meeting place, Misery is genuinely glad to see Owen, but the reunion immediately turns into a new shock: Owen is not alone. A woman steps out with him, and her scent marks her as someone tied to Were blood. Misery realizes she is Lowe’s mate.
