Chapter 30
Overview
Misery, fearing Lowe has pushed her away now that the political crisis is ending, returns to his house and confronts him. Lowe admits he lied to protect her from feeling trapped by the Were mate bond, but both finally confess that their love is chosen, not merely biological, and Misery decides to stay with him, Ana, and the pack. As Serena cautiously reconnects with her Were side and Lowe moves to prosecute Emery while preparing to tell Ana the truth, Misery and Lowe fully accept and consummate their mate bond.
Summary
For three days, Misery barely sees Lowe as himself; she only sees him acting as Alpha, moving between urgent meetings with Owen, Cal, and others. During that time, Misery stays close to Serena and notices how captivity has changed her: Serena is exhausted, emotionally fragile, and unsure of what she wants. When Juno offers to help trace Serena’s Were parent, Misery encourages Serena to wait until she feels ready, and later supports Serena’s wish to spend time with Weres simply to understand that side of herself.
The next day, Misery finds Owen and asks where Lowe is. Owen tells her the negotiations are temporarily over, that the Collateral arrangement is effectively ending, and that neither he nor Lowe intends to force Misery or Gabi to continue in that role. When Owen presses her on whether she actually wants to live with Lowe, Misery cannot get a clear answer about Lowe’s feelings, so she takes Owen’s car, drives Serena to Were territory, leaves Serena with Juno, and goes to Lowe’s house herself. There, she finds her belongings boxed up and immediately assumes Lowe is removing her from his life.
Lowe arrives and quickly clears up the misunderstanding: Misery still lives there, and he only packed her things because he is replacing her windows with versions better suited to her needs. Their conversation widens to other unresolved matters. Lowe agrees that Serena should meet Ana after he tells Ana the truth about her parents, confirms that Serena will be welcome with the pack, and explains that he has been dealing with Emery, who now faces a tribunal because of evidence tying her to Loyal violence. He also admits his pain over Mick’s betrayal. That honesty pushes Misery to confront the deeper issue: Lowe’s earlier claim that he did not truly want her. Misery accuses him of lying to wound and drive her away, and directly asks whether she is his mate.
Lowe finally explains that he tried to let Misery go because he feared the mate bond would trap her into a life she did not freely choose. He says that what began as an unwanted bond became real love through knowing her, and that even without the bond he would still want her. Misery answers by refusing his attempt at self-sacrifice: she loves him too, wants to stay in his home, wants to be part of Ana’s life, and wants a place in Were territory alongside Serena. When Lowe reveals that he is terrified he will never be able to release her later if she changes her mind, Misery insists that she is choosing him consciously and repeatedly. Their reconciliation turns physical as they kiss and both accept that they are no longer acting out of duty or political necessity.
Misery and Lowe then consummate their bond fully. The encounter confirms both the depth of their emotional commitment and the physical reality of Lowe’s mate response, including the Were knot, which Misery discovers she not only tolerates but intensely enjoys. Afterward, they remain openly affectionate and discuss practical consequences of being together: Lowe’s possessiveness in the immediate aftermath, Misery’s place in his life, their future despite species differences, and the later possibility of a formal mate bite and scar on Were terms. In the shower, Misery feeds from Lowe and they have sex again, ending the chapter with both of them embracing the bond as something they actively want, not something fate merely imposed.
