Chapter 29
Overview
After the failed plot, Misery learns that Owen and Lowe worked together to expose her father, who is now captured and stripped of power. Owen declares that he will replace his father on the council and pursue peace with Weres and Humans, while Misery rejects both the chance to lead the Vampyres and the burden of deciding her father’s fate. The chapter closes on a more intimate shift as Misery reconciles with Serena over the hidden truth of Serena’s hybrid nature and finally admits that her feelings for Lowe may be love.
Summary
In the aftermath of the fight, Misery sits in the Nest’s stairwell while Gabi treats the knife wound near her collarbone. Surrounded by Alex, Ludwig, Cal, and other Weres, Misery fixates on the absurd question of what happens to Were clothes during a shift, using the joke to avoid dwelling on the violence. Owen then takes Misery aside and explains what happened: after security footage identified Mick breaking into Serena’s apartment, Owen contacted Lowe, and Lowe realized Misery was in danger. Lowe devised the lie that Owen had captured him, which allowed Owen and the Weres to enter the Nest and expose the collaboration between the governor, Mick, and Misery’s father.
Owen leads Misery into a room where Lowe is waiting and Misery’s father is restrained, blindfolded, and powerless. When Owen confronts him, Misery’s father shows no remorse and says he would do everything again. Owen answers by promising that when he takes his father’s place on the Vampyre council, he will dismantle his father’s policies, pursue alliances with Weres and Humans, and reduce the old border-driven hostility. Asked whether she wants to say anything, Misery realizes she has nothing meaningful left for her father and refuses to give him more of herself.
After the blindfold is replaced, Lowe asks Misery what should be done with her father and raises the possibility that Misery herself could claim the council seat instead of Owen. Owen confirms that he would allow it, though the Vampyres would resist her. Misery considers what it would mean to finally belong among her own people, but the prospect holds little appeal. She questions Lowe about Mick’s missing son, Mick’s fate, and Ana’s safety; Lowe says people are searching for the boy, he has not decided Mick’s punishment, and Ana is safe because Misery’s father never learned where she was. Misery ultimately refuses both leadership and judgment, leaving her father’s fate to Owen and Lowe and asking not to be told the outcome unless necessary.
Misery sleeps in her childhood bedroom at the Nest and wakes before sundown to find Serena beside her. Serena expects anger, but Misery says she is hurt rather than angry and asks why Serena hid the truth that she was part Were. Serena explains that at first she doubted her own body, feared she was delusional, and later feared both Misery’s anti-Were jokes and the danger her unstable condition might bring to Misery. While imprisoned, Serena used isolation to study herself and practice shifting, though she still does not fully understand what she is. The conversation ends in reconciliation: Serena asks Misery to be her only good friend again, Misery embraces her, promises her friendship is unchanged, and admits that she thinks she may be in love with a Were.
